EducateWV.me Platform for Personalized Learning TechSteps for the Next Generation New platform Implementation Cyber safety report Introduction to EducateWV.me June 11, 2013

TechSteps K-8 for the Next Generation Standards Uniform structure of six projects per grade level: 2 Next Generation Math 2 Next Generation ELA 1 Social Studies 1 Science With few exceptions—minor / no changes to Social Studies and Science activities: Pending definition of standards To reduce impact on teachers Rigor: Increased in all activities E.g., write a story instead of describe a scene in Flight Write, more questions requiring a written response in math

Text Types: TS reflects the CC emphasis on informational text, in most cases in ELA (Example: New activity—Animal Explorations focuses on text features in non-fiction texts) Evidence from Text: Multiple activities focus on evidentiary argument in reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities (Example: Prove It) Emphasis on Speaking and Listening: TS2 provides frequent opportunities for presentation small group discussion as well as presentation to the class Text Complexity: Selected activities include texts drawn directly from grade- level exemplars to ensure alignment with complexity / quality requirements. Examples: Picture Poetry (Emily Dickinson), Reading the Past (Frederick Douglass—historically significant text – reflects CC emphasis on literary non- fiction) Wherever possible (given the open-ended nature of TS), text-dependent questions have been included - in discussions about sample texts and in 2 cases about set texts Wherever possible (given the open-ended nature of TS ), opportunities for students to engage with academic vocabulary have been provided Literacy in the Content Areas: Routine reading and writing is required in Social Studies and Science activities. English Language Arts

Activities model a problem-solving environment “in which reasoning, sense making, applications, and a range of mathematical practices all thrive” (Publisher’s Criteria - focus) Emphasis on arithmetic in Grades 1-5 (focus): New: Quick Tens, Subtraction Models Emphasis on major work of the grade: One activity at each grade—major cluster Second activity “positioned in support of the major work of the grade” (Example: Graph It) OR emphasis on Mathematical Practices (e.g., Ray’s Electricity Calculator) Grade level shifts: Vector Translations +1, Measure Your Hand +1, Mental Math -1 Grade-appropriate addition and subtraction situations based on CC Glossary Rigor: Activities reflect rigor that is at the heart of the CCSSM – Emphasis on conceptual understanding through meaningful uses of technology Example: Use of visual model in Hold a Bake Sale – Emphasis on real world problems and applications of mathematics – (As a supplemental company we cannot address fluency) Increased emphasis on discussion – activities prompt students with “specific expectations for explaining and justifying” (p 14 Publisher’s Criteria) as well as “critiquing the arguments of others” Attention to the specialized language of mathematics (glossary, group discussion) Activities engage students in tasks that promote student development of practices Projects provide model of integration of Practices with Content Mathematics

Global awareness Images are drawn from many cultures. Problems are set in different contexts. (E.g., new version of E-Pals) Lexile levels Grade-appropriate, lower range rather than “stretch” range that requires additional support Implementation notes An “In the Classroom” page has been added to many activities, giving more opportunities to gather evidence of standards Real world application Rubrics Reduced to a single page Addition of systems thinking (E.g., in Now You’re in Business, Zoom In) Carefully mapped to standards for content and when appropriate, mathematical practices Activity Library including STEM modules General
