1 Dinosaurs Before Dark

2 What is a dinosaur? Dinosaurs are reptiles that lived millions
of years ago.

3 When did dinosaurs live?
Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. Not all dinosaurs lived at the same time. Some lived during the Triassic period. Some lived during the Jurassic period. And some lived during the Cretaceous period. All of the dinosaurs in this book lived during the Cretaceous period.

4 Where did dinosaurs live?
There is evidence from paleontologists that dinosaurs lived all over the world.

5 What is a paleontologist?
A paleontologist is a scientist that searches for and studies dinosaur bones and fossils.

6 What is a fossil? Fossils are the impressions of ancient life preserved in rocks.

7 What can fossils tell us?
Fossils help us learn how living things evolved on Earth. Fossils can help paleontologists to date rocks.

8 What did Earth look like when dinosaurs were alive?

9 What kinds of trees were there?
Magnolia Tree Oak Tree

10 What kinds of dinosaurs were there?

11 Pteranodon

12 The Pteranodon (ter-AN-o-DON) lived at the time of the dinosaurs, but it was not a dinosaur. Pteranondon was a flying reptile. Although Pteranodon means “winged and toothless” Pteranodon was a carnivore (meat-eater) and probably ate fish. Pteranodon lived during the Cretaceous period. It had a wingspan of ft. long and it weighted about 55 lbs. It had a crest is on his head and a short tail

13 Tyrannosaurus Rex

14 Tyrannosaurus Rex was a was a meat–eating dinosaur (carnivore) that lived during the Cretaceous Period. It had tiny arms each with two fingers. The T. Rex could eat 500 lbs. of meat and bones at one time! It weighed about 5 to 7 tons. At one time it was believed to be the largest dinosaur, but we now know there were dinosaurs that were larger.

17 Triceratops Triceratops, which means “three-horned face” was a herbivore (plant-eating) dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous period.

18

19 Anatosaurus Anatosaurus was a duck-billed dinosaur that lived in the late Cretaceous period. Anatosaurus was an herbivore (plant-eater.) It is believed to have been one of the last dinosaurs to become extinct.

20 How were dinosaurs born?
Dinosaurs laid eggs in nests. It is believed that dinosaurs lived together and helped each other take care of their babies.
