3 Sales tax, tip, and a markup are all calculated by changing the percent to a decimal and then multiplying that decimal by the original amount. Total cost can then be found by adding this product to the original amount. Simple interest is found by multiplying the percent, written as a decimal, times the original amount times the time in years. Total saved or borrowed can then be found by adding this product to the original amount, or principal.
