3 Chancel Parish churches might be in the shape of a cross to represent Jesus being crucified. The Nave is where the congregation (people) sit and the chancel has the important altar. The altar faces east towards Jerusalem and the rising sun. This reminds us that Jesus is known as the Light of the World

4 The font is used during the service of baptism. It contains water which has been blessed and stands near the entrance to the church. Baptism (or christening) symbolises the entry of a person into God’s family and the church. It reminds us also of the time when Jesus was baptised in the River Jordan by John the Baptist.

5 This is an eagle-shaped reading desk which holds the Bible. During a service a member of the congregation can read passages from the Bible to remind people of the stories from Jesus’ life. The eagle is a powerful bird that carries the word of God on its back around the world to all people. The eagle stands on a globe to show this.
