3. Magnetism  Magnetism: A force of attraction or repulsion between various substances, ultimately it is due to the motion of electric charges.

5. Purpose: To explore the properties of magnetism.

6. Pre Lab: (Write the questions and answer them.) 1.What is the difference between an electrical insulator and conductor? 2.Of the materials, list the materials from best to worst magnetic insulators? (paper, foil, cotton cloth, wool felt, and plastic bags) 3.Why do you think these materials will be better magnetic insulators?

7. Materials: 2 bar magnets 1 horseshoe magnet 1 compass 10 paper clips printer paper aluminum foil cotton cloth wool felt plastic bag

8. Part 1: Observations Make six detailed observations using the materials provided.

9. Part 2: Magnetic Insulators 1.Put one layer of the material between a bar magnet and the paper clips, record how many it holds. 2.Place the magnet with the material near the compass (5 cm), record if the compass moves. 3.Repeat step #1 and #2 but put two, four and eight layers for each of the 5 materials.

10. Part 3: Magnetic Fields Draw an arrow in the direction of which way the red needle points for each of the diagrams that are on the lab tables.

18. Cautions and Reminders: Compasses should not be closer then 5 cm (~2 in.) from the magnets. Please keep the magnets separated and the compass away from the magnets when done and leave the area the way that you found it, thank you. There are follow-up questions after part 3.
