Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.— Amen.

John 17 The Great High Priestly Prayer of our Lord!

John 17:20-26 Jesus Prays for the Church!

John 17:24 Spiritual Perfection and Completeness.

John 17:24a, “Father, whom you have given to Me.”

John 17:24a, “Father, whom you have given to Me.” “You have given to Me” - DEDOKAS MOI Perfect, Active, Ind., 2 nd P., S.

The Perfect Tense: The believer has been given by the Father to His Son, vs. 9 and 11. The Church is a gift from the Father to His Son.

Principles: 7 times our Lord said, “given to Me”, in this GHPP. 7 is the # of Spiritual Perfection.

1) Vs. 4, “Having accomplished the work.” 1 is the # of unity, Jesus completed the Father’s Plan, including the Cross, demonstrating His Unity with the Father.

2) Vs. 7, “Everything is from You.” 2 is the # of difference, and speaks to Jesus’ incarnation, His humanity.

All of Jesus’ physical and spiritual needs in His humanity were met by God the Father; the perfection of Logistical Grace blessings.

3) Vs. 9, “Ask on behalf of those.” 3 is the # of Divine Completion speaking of the perfect and complete gift of the disciples to Jesus by the Father according to His perfect Plan...

… along with the spiritually perfect process of prayer on their behalf.

4) Vs. 11, “Keep them in Your name.” 4 is the # of material completion and creation, “I am no longer in the world as they are.”

“Name” - ONOMA = “authority”, used for “a title” signifying one’s authority, character or nature. The perfect and complete power of God manifested in His person, (cf. 5:43; 10:25; 12:28; 17:6, 26).

The perfect Essence of God the Father signifying all that is protecting the believer in the world.

5) Vs. 12, “Keeping them in Your name.” 5 is the # of Grace. Jesus refers to His part of completing the Plan of perfectly protecting the disciples.

We see the grace of God in that “not one of them perished, but the son of perdition.” In grace God provides and in grace He allows our free will to choose for or against Christ.

6) Vs. 22, “The glory I have given to them.” 6 is the # of man. Jesus is giving His glory to members of the human race (believers), which results in unity.

7) Vs. 24, “They be with Me.” “They may see My glory.” 7 is the # of Spiritual Perfection and this verse completes the spiritual journey of Christ on behalf of mankind.

Our Lord is petitioning for the spiritual perfection of believers in that they are resurrected and in heaven where Christ is, separated from sin and the world.

DEDOSKAS MOI twice = eight usages. 8 in Hebrew is Shemoneh, “to make fat, cover with fat, or super- abound.” It is the “superabundant” number.

Scriptures tying together seven and eight:

1) Isa 5:1-2 where there are eight sentences describing the vineyard but seven give the characteristics and one the result.

John 17, Jesus tells of seven characteristics of the Father’s gifts and the last is the result, “Seeing His glory”.

2) Col 3:12-14 - seven “graces” but in vs 14 over all these, there is “love”, which is the “perfect bond of unity”, the major theme John 17.

3) Jesus was on a mountain eight times, seven before the Cross and one after He rose from the dead, in glory.

8 is associated with resurrection and regeneration and the beginning of a new era, especially when it stands alone.

1) Noah, the 8 th person, 2 Peter 2:5, stepped out on to a new earth, and 8 passed through the flood with him to the new or regenerated world.

2 Peter 2:5, “And did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly.”

2) Christ rose on the first day of the week, 8 th day, and the Bible records eight individual resurrections.

3) The Transfiguration took place on the 8 th day after the first announcement of Christ’s “sufferings” and it was the showing forth of His “glory.”

Also, 8 is the # of Jesus’ name, IESOUS (888) and a multiple in His other names including, CHRISTOS, KURIOS, SOTER (Savior), EMMANOUEL (Emmanuel), MESSIAS, and HUIOS (son).

In John 17:24 we see Glory, Grace and Resurrection all tied together that brings home the overall theme of this chapter regarding God’s love which is the perfect bond of unity.
