2 What is a goal? Brainstorm as a class.

3 A goal is something you want to achieve or attain. It can be something for the future or something for today. A goal is something you work towards.

4 Why are goals important? Brainstorm as a class.

5 Why are goals important? Goals help us figure out what is important to us. Goals help us plan our future. When we achieve our goals, we set the direction of our lives and become responsible for ourselves. Goals help us to achieve the things we want to achieve. Goals should be something important to you...

6 Goal Setting Goals involve things that are important and meaningful to you. If you don't think your goals are important, you probably will not achieve them. Goals take time and work to achieve. If you set a goal for yourself, it should be something you are willing to work for. Goals can be long term (career, life goal). Goals can be short term (a thing you want to accomplish right away). Brainstorm examples of short and long term goals.

9 Steps to Setting Goals 1.Figure out what is important to you. 1.Ask yourself what you want to have happen in your life. Today? This week? This month? This year? 5 years from now? 10 years from now? 2.Achieving goals does not happen automatically. It takes planning and effort. 3.Write the goal. 2.Outline the steps to achieving the goal. 3.Outline the obstacles (things that could get in the way) to achieving the goal. 4.Create a time line for achieving the goal

10 Step 1: Figure out what is important to you. Take 5 minutes and think of one goal you want to achieve. It needs to be something you want to have happen within one year. It could be related to school or related to something outside of school, but it must be something important to you. Goals can be a means to an end i.e. you might set a goal to achieve something that maybe you don't really care about in order to get something you really do care about. Write the goal

11 Choosing a Goal 1.Don't just choose the first goal you think of. 2.Come up with things you think might interest you... 3....Brainstorm 4.Then pick the one you feel strongest about. 5.Use your instincts and feelings to make that decision. 6.Write the goal.

12 Step 2: Outline the steps to achieving the goal. Achieving goals takes planning and effort. It may seem difficult, but if you plan it out, step by step, you will get there. Remember, goals can be a means to an end. Take 5-7 minutes and outline the steps to achieving your goal. See next slide for an example...

13 Steps to achieving a goal: Example Goal: I want to get an A or a B in math so my parents will let me play video games for one hour extra at night. Steps: 1.Pay attention in class 1.Ask questions if I don't understand 2.Complete all class-work 3.Complete all homework 1.Write down assignments 2.Actually do them and turn them in 4.Do well on quizzes and tests 1.Study 2.Stay after school if necessary

16 Steps to Setting Goals 1. To review, here are all the steps to setting a goal... 2.Figure out what is important to you. 1.Ask yourself what you want to have happen in your life. Today? This week? 17 Possible obstacles to Achieving Goal Why might it be important to know what might prevent you from achieving your goal? What things could get in the way? 1.Reread your goal. 2.Reread the steps to achieving your goal. What things could get in the way of you accomplishing those steps. 3.Make a list or outline of everything you can think of that could get in the way of you achieving your goals. See next slide for an example

19 Create a timeline Now that you have written a goal, listed the steps to achieve it and the obstacles to the goal, make a timeline for achieving your goal. 1.Think of a date by which you want to have your goal achieved 2.Now look at the steps to achieving your goal. Figure out when you need to accomplish each step in order to achieve your goal. How long will it take you to achieve each step? 3.Are your dates reasonable? Can you achieve all the steps in the time you said you could? Make adjustments. Focus on the smaller steps that lead up to the goal.
