Chapter 22

Jem cried about the jury’s decision. He kept on saying “It ain’t right”. Told Dill to stop going places without telling adults where he was going.

Jem told Miss Maudie he always thought Maycomb folks were the best folks in the world but now he was rudely awakened. Jem wishes more people tried to help his father. Jem says Christian judges and Christian lawyers can’t make up for heathen juries.

Atticus waited for the children under the streetlight. He looked as if nothing happened, his old impassive self. He agreed with Jem that it was not right. Atticus said the court were as much part of Maycomb county as missionary teas were. The children had a right to be exposed to it.

He was tired and went to bed. Atticus told Jem the jury did it before, they did it tonight and they would do it again. (He refers to the fact that a white jury will always find a black man guilty)

It was not time to worry yet, Atticus was going to appeal the case. Atticus’s eyes filled with tears when he saw all the gifts. He told Calpurnia to thank them and to ask them not to do it again, times were hard.

Said to Atticus: “I’m sorry brother.” Alexandra continued to say that the children should not have been in court.

Tom Robinson’s father sent a chicken. Estelle down at the hotel sent rolls. There were hunks of salt pork, tomatoes, beans, scuppernongs, a jar of pickled pigs knuckles.

Calpurnia found all the food around the steps the morning when she arrived, the negro quarters were grateful for what he has done.

Arrived for breakfast Dill said he would have told Miss Rachel but Miss Rachel was tired from looking for Dill the previous night.

Dill said he told Miss Rachel many times where he was but she drank too much early in the morning to remember. Dill said he would be a clown one day. He will join a circus and laugh his head of at people. He will be a new kind of clown who will laugh at people not be laughed at.

If Atticus Finch wants to butt his head against a stone wall it’s his head.

Wants to know who gave them permission to go to the courtroom Did Atticus put them up in the coloured balcony? Wasn’t it right close up there with all those __?

Did Scout understand all the testimonies? Didn’t it make you mad to see your daddy beat?

Silences Stephanie. Asks Jem if they will be able to eat some cake. For the first time Jem got a slice of cake from the big cake and Dill and Scout still got to little cakes.

She tells Jem not to worry, things are not as bad as it seems. She simply wants to tell them that there are some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Atticus was one of them. She realises Jem does not understand what she is trying to say.

Maudie says Maycomb folks are the safest in the world and when they are asked to act like Christians, Atticus does it for them. Miss Maudie points out that there are people who help Atticus.

It was no coincidence that Judge Taylor appointed Atticus to defend Tom Robinson. Court-appointed defences was always given to Maxwell Green. Miss Maudie said she waited the previous night for the outcome of the jury and realized it was only Atticus Finch who could make a jury take so much time to make a descision.

Miss Rachel told Dill to get in the backyard and stay there. Danger was coming. Miss Stephanie said that Mr Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post-office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life.
