2 Words to Know and Student Journal (3-1). 1.This will be your homework tonight. 2.You will create definitions for each word to know. 3.Then they can do the cross word puzzle. 4.Leave the Journal Questions for Later.

3 Introduction to Bioregions.

4 BIOREGION is part of the earth’s surface identified by it’s combination of natural and human characteristics.

5 The living part of a bioregion can affect the non-living part in many ways. HOW??? –Discuss with a neighbour Plants - Animals – Humans -

7 THE PARTS OF A BIOREGION Do handout 3 -2 – Parts of a Bioregion

8 3 EXAMPLES OF BIOREGIONS IN CAN. A. TUNDRA – cold region, with small shrubs, lichens and mosses. This region has a short growing season. B. WETLANDS – usually found on the Canadian Shield Landform region because of the rock. Water does not soak in. Swamps and Marshes. C. WOODLOT – forest land left when farms were created along the St. Lawrence River.

9 Group Activity. You will need the handout titled “Three Examples of Bioregions in Canada”. you are going to draw pictures to represent these three bioregions. Discuss in your groups the pictures/symbols/icons best to use to describe each bioregion.

10 CHARACTERISTICS OF BIOREGIONS There are three main characteristics of BIOREGIONS that we study. 1.SOIL 2.FLORA (Plants) 3.FAUNA (Animals)

11 CHARACTERISTICS OF “YOUR” BIOREGION With a partner, try to describe the SOIL, FLORA AND FAUNA where you live. Write your thoughts into your notebook.

12 Use the Handout Provided Titled, Characteristics of Bioregions. You will need to use Pages 58 – 61. Read through the text and the words on your handout to fill in the blanks.

13 FOOD CHAIN DIAGRAM Activity 3 – 4. Answer Question 18 on page 61.

14 Making a Bioregion Web. Activity 3 – 6. Work in groups of three to complete this activity.

15 CASE STUDY Great Lakes Alvars: Land of Extremes. Page 62 – 64. Complete Activity sheet 3 – 7 “Making Notes”. You will complete Questions 1 – 3 on page 64. This will be collected. Use Activity Sheet 3 – 8 “Interactions in the Alvar” to Complete Question #2.

17 BIOREGIONS IN ONTARIO Read Page 64 together. Put title into Notebook “Bioregions in Ontario” Complete Questions 19 and 20. Read Page 65 together. Complete Question 21 and 22. Play the Motocross Challenge. Need Activity Sheet 3 – 9 “Motocross Challenge”. Read Page 67. Complete Questions # 23 into notebook. Finish Reading Page 67-68. List all the ways in which we can protect our local bioregion.
