6 Simon - Peter His Name: Simon means “hearing”. Peter - PETROS means, “a rock, stone, pebble, a mass of rock detached from a larger rock.”

7 Four forms of Peter’s name in the NT: Hebrew to Greek “Simeon - Simon” Aramaic to Greek “Cephas - Petros”.

8 Background: Peter was the son of Jonas, Jonah or John, Mat 16:17; John 1:42; 21:15-16, and was the older brother of Andrew.

9 His mother is not named in Scripture but traditionally known as Joanna.

10 He was a native of Bethsaida, the northwestern coast of the Sea of Galilee, John 1:44.

12 Peter and his brother Andrew had a fishing business centered in Capernaum, Mat 4:18; Mark 1:16, 21, 29, and were partners of James and John, Luke 5:10.

13 Peter, like other Apostles, was married, Mark 1:29- 31, 1 Cor 9:5, and maintained a residence in Capernaum, Mark 1:21.

14 1 Cor 9:5, “Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas?”

15 Personality: He was a pioneer among the twelve and the early church, breaking ground which the church would later follow.

16 Galileans had a reputation for independence and energy which often ran into turbulence. They were frank and more transparent, blunt, impetuous, heady, and simplistic.

17 The Galileans spoke a peculiar dialect which was recognizable. Mark 14:70; Acts 2:7

18 Role Among the Disciples: Peter had been influenced by the teaching of John the Baptist, John 1:35-42.

19 He was the first to be called, Mark 1:16-18, first named an apostle. Mark 3:14-16

20 Peter first proclaimed Jesus as Lord and the Messiah. Mat 16:13-17; w/ Luke 5:8-11

21 He is credited with being a leader of the twelve. His name always occurs first, in the lists of disciples. Mat 10:2; Mark 3:16; Luke 6:14

22 He frequently served as the spokesman for the disciples and usually raised questions they all wanted to ask. Mat 15:15; 18:21; Mark 8:29-33; 10:28; 11:21; Luke 12:41

23 He was a member of the inner circle with James and John, present with Jesus at:
