Matter

What is mass?  Mass is a measurement of how much matter is in the object. Units English vs. Metric Which is Larger? 1. 1 Pound or 100 Grams 2. 1 Kilogram or 1 Pound 3. 1 Ounce or 1000 Milligram

Mass

Measuring Mass

What is Volume?  Volume is a measure of the space occupied by a sample of matter  Basic Unit is a liter (L or l)  1 Liter (l) = 1000 milliliter (ml)  1milliliter (ml) = 1cm 3 (1c.c) = 1 gram Which is larger? A. 1 liter or 1500 milliliters B. 200 milliliters or 1.2 liters C. 12 cm 3 or 1.2 milliliters

Measuring Volume

Measuring Solid Volume

Density Density is ratio of mass of an object to its volume. Density is an intensive property; an intensive property is a property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount of matter.

Sample Problems 1. Your teacher gives you a little square block metal which is exactly 1 centimeter cubed. It is small, but weighs 4.5 grams. What is its density? 2. A piece of metal weighs 3 grams and has a density of 2.70 grams per cubic centimeter. What must be its volume?
