2 Lesson 14 Standard: ELACC1L2: I can spell new words by sounding them out and by using spelling rules I know. Essential Question: How can I become familiar with these words.

3 again  Once more, another time; to a previous place position or state.  I read my favorite book again.

4 feel  To perceive through sense of touch.  I feel happy today

5 house  A building used as a dwelling for one or more families.  She lives in a big house.

6 know  To be certain of or have practical understanding of.  Do you know her name?

7 loud  High volume and intensity of sound.  The fire alarm is loud!

8 Mrs.  A title used when speaking to a married woman.  Her name is Mrs. Jones.

9 put  To place in a specific location.  I put on my coat and hat.

10 say  To express in words  Arlene remembered to say “Thank you.”

11 hard  Firm and solid; not gentle; or something that is very difficult.  The worker will wear a hard hat.

12 shy - Bashful, does not feel comfortable around people or strangers. - The kitten is shy.

13 Spelling Words  Standard: ELACC1L2d: When I write, I use basic spelling patterns to help me spell words correctly.  Essential Question: Do some of these words have the same word family?

14 far  A large distance.  Brad ran very far.

15 farm  Land cultivated for the purpose of agriculture.  Have you visited a farm?

16 arm  An upper limb of the human body connecting the hand and wrist to the shoulder  Raise your arm if you wish for a turn to speak.

17 art  The use of sounds, color, forms, movements or other elements that effects beauty or entertainment.  I love what you made in art class!

18 part  A portion or segment of a whole piece.  What part of the story came next?

19 park  Noun: Land set aside for public use. Verb: to put or leave and object or vehicle for a time.  Remember to park your bike.

20 chin  The center position of the lower jaw.  The puppet had a pointed chin.

21 such  Of so extreme or great degree or quality.  They did such a good job singing their songs!

22 fly  To move through the air by means of wings or wing like parts  The jet can fly.

23 watch  To look at something or someone.  I like to watch my kitten.

24 Robust Vocabulary  Standard:ELA1R5a Reads and listens to a variety of texts and uses new words in oral and written language  Essential Question: How will these words make my vocabulary stronger?

25 approached If you approached something, you moved toward it.

26 approached The hare agreed to race and approached the starting line. If I approached the door, I would move closer to it. If I approached you, I would move closer to where you are sitting.

27 approached What would you do if a bug approached you? What would you do if we were playing a game and I asked you to approach your partner? Tell about something that you would NOT approach.

28 energetic If you are energetic, you are filled with energy.

29 energetic The hare bragged that a slow, poky tortoise could never beat a fast, energetic hare. I feel energetic if I sleep well and then eat a healthful breakfast. Do you feel energetic if you do these things too? Why?

30 energetic Would you be surprised if someone told you he or she felt energetic after a long bike ride? Why? If you are tired, what are some things that you can do to make yourself feel more energetic? How could you help a family member if you are feeling energetic?

31 pace Your pace is how fast you are going.

32 pace The tortoise kept up a slow, steady pace during the race. If a race was short, I would run at a fast pace. If a race was long, I would run at a much slower pace.

33 pace Would you be more likely to read a hard story at a fast pace or at a slow pace? Why? If I told you we were going to walk down the hall at a fast pace, how would we move? How would you compare your pace to the pace of a racehorse? How would you compare your pace to a caterpillar?

34 blunder If you make a blunder, you make a bad or silly mistake.

35 blunder When Mark made a blunder during the play, all the children looked at him. I made a blunder when I was singing a song because I forgot the words. Have you ever made a blunder like that?

36 blunder I will name some things. If you think it is a blunder, say, “Oops, what a blunder!” If not, say nothing. misspelled a word doing a hard problem sharpening a pencil spilling a glass of milk mispronouncing a word leaving lunch on a bus

37 reassure If you reassure someone, you tell him or her that everything will be all right.

38 reassure Mrs. Parks tried to reassure Mark by telling him not to feel bad about forgetting his part. If we do a class play, I would reassure you by telling you that you can do a good job.

39 reassure I will say some things. If these things could be said to reassure someone, say “thumbs up”. If not, say nothing. You can do it!I believe in you! Don’t even try it!Give it your best! You’ll do just fine!Forget it! Don’t give up!You’ll be terrific!

40 excel If you excel at something, you are very good at it.

41 excel Mark wanted to excel by saying his part in a loud voice. I want to excel at playing the piano, so I practice every day.

42 excel I will name some things. If you would like to excel at these things, say “I excel!” If not, say nothing. riding a bikeputting on a jacket walking a dogeating a sandwich reading a hard bookscoring a goal answering math problems dancing for an audience
