1 ΣΣΦ Sigma Chapter Annual Report 2012 Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine

2 Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (UP-KYCOM) is the 19th school of osteopathic medicine in the country.

3 Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine KYCOM is located in central Appalachia, the eastern part of Kentucky. The panoramic scenes of hills and valleys have contributed to the often isolated, rural background of this region. Our school’s mission is to produce physicians to serve the people of this region.

5 Demographic and economic data reveal rates higher than state and national levels for unemployment, work disability, poverty, Medicaid, uninsured and mortality for all ages.

8 Exciting Changes at KYCOM We all are very excited about the growth of our facilities and the expansion of our class sizes from 80 to 135 in the current 1 st year class.

9 The Coal Building KYCOM has moved into the Coal Building for the start of the 2012 academic year.

12 ΣΣΦ Requirements Each member in the Sigma chapter is required to maintain above average academic scholarship in addition to completion of 30 hours of community service a year. We encourage each of our members to achieve a T.O.U.C.H. pin, signifying 50 hours of community service.

14 Relay For Life 2012 In our seventh year participating with Relay for Life, Team KYCOM raised over $1,200. We tie-dyed t-shirts to sell as an additional fundraiser throughout the evening.

16 Medical Mission Trip to Batey Nueve, Dominican Republic This year KYCOM students helped raise enough money to send students to a small town in the Dominican Republic. The team collected pharmaceuticals and medical equipment in order to set up a clinic and pharmacy in the community.

18 Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Our KYCOM team collected student donations, sponsored $2 dress down days for both classes, had a quilt raffle and hosted a dodge ball tournament to serve as our major fundraisers.

19 Future Sigma Chapter Activities Soup Kitchen volunteers – November/December 2012 – plan to partner with new Rotaract club in serving a local shelter Chapter Fundraiser – Long-sleeved t-shirts Applalacian SPCA – Spring 2013 – plan to establish a new volunteer relationship with local SPCA New member induction- March 2013 Officer transitions- April 2013 Graduation -May 2013 Relay for Life – June 2013 – participate in major fundraising all year long
