1 I am sorry, Year 7, but the films of your work have not yet been edited. Instead, you’re going to make a model….

2 In the 9 th century there were battles across England between the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

3 In 871 the Vikings took over London. The city was destroyed.

4 Eventually the Saxon king Alfred the Great took London back.

5 For the next hundred years the river Lea was the boundary between Saxon land (to the west) and Viking land (to the east). Vikings Saxons (English) LONDON LEYTON

6 Leyton was on the front line, in the middle of the fighting.

7 In 894 Viking ships rowed up the Lea and built a fortress.

8 One year later the English attacked them but failed. So King Alfred built two fortresses lower down the river so the Vikings could not get their ships out.

9 About 100 years ago the remains of a Viking longboat was found near Lea Bridge. What might it have looked like?

10 YOUR TASK: Using the resources provided, make a Viking ship. RESOURCES: Plain paper, sugar paper, glue, scissors, sellotape, coloured pencils, information sheets.
