2 congress.nsc.org Prescription Drug Overdose Drug overdoses now cause more deaths than car crashes. Prescription painkillers contribute to more deaths than any other drug.

3 congress.nsc.org Prescription Drug Overdose Reduce prescribing of opioid painkillers Partner with American College of Physicians and American Academy of Family Physicians to develop prescriber guidelines for the treatment of acute pain. Work with insurance companies and PBMs to develop restrictions to prevent inappropriate prescribing of opioid medications Mobilize employers to protect workers Educate employers about effective drug-free workplace strategies to improve safety and reduce costs Reduce opioid use in the treatment of Workers Comp injuries Engage families and communities to prevent misuse and overdose Inform individuals and families about risks of opioid painkiller use and what they can do to prevent addiction and overdose Advocate to change laws and regulations Supporting prescription monitoring programs, eliminating pill mills, promoting safer opioid prescribing, increasing access to treatment and naloxone, an antidote that reverses drug overdose
