6 NEW INFORMATION (PLACE IN BOOKS) Example 1: When putting together their money to buy a Mother’s Day present three children needed a total of $149. Fred had $52 and Mary had $65. How much did Billie need to put in to buy the present? HOW MANY PROBLEMS NEED TO BE SOLVED HERE?

7 NEW INFORMATION STEP 1: ADD Fred and Mary had $52 + $65 = $117

8 NEW INFORMATION Fred and Mary had $52 + $65 = $117 $117 + (?HOW MUCH BILLY NEEDS TO PAY)=$149 Use inverse operation! STEP 2: SUBTRACT We need to subtract $117 from $149 to find out how much Billie needed to pay.
