( + ) ÷ ( + ) = ( + ) ( – ) ÷ ( – ) = ( + ) Simplify the following. ( + ) ÷ ( – ) = ( – ) ( – ) ÷ ( + ) = ( – ) 1) – 54 ÷ ( – 9 )= 6 2) – 48 ÷ 6= – 8 3) 81 ÷ ( – 9 )= – 9 4) – 144 ÷ ( – 12 )= 12 5) – 6 ÷ ( – 8 )= 3 / 4

0.09 Square Roots

A perfect square number is a number that results from squaring the counting numbers. When you square a number you raise that number to the second power. 1 2 = 1, 2 2 = 4, 3 2 = 9, 4 2 = 16, … Perfect Squares: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, …

A Square Root Symbol means “ the square root of x“ By definition = k such that k 2 = x = 6 because 6 2 = 36 = 8 because 8 2 = 64

When taking the square root of a perfect square, the answer will be a positive integer. = 5 = 10 Some numbers are not perfect squares, we can approximate the square root by determining what two numbers the square root lies between. is between 4 and 5 is between 7 and 8 is between 9 and 10

Try This: = 7 = 12 Find the 2 numbers that the following square root lies between. is between 4 and 5 is between 8 and 9 is between 6 and 7
