Agenda Low Cost Server – is there such a thing ? Who buys these server and what do they do ? Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation Product details Usage scenarios Availability Q&A

What will a basic commodity server look like in 2012? Basic Commodity Server 1 or 2 sockets Dual or quad core 4 to 16 hardware threads (logical processors) ½ - 2 GB DDR2 RAM (expandable to 8 to 64GB) 80 to 160GB attached 3.5 inch hard disk drive (up to 4 bays) ~$300 to $1500 without OS installed 2009 2012 1 or 2 sockets (1P servers grow faster than 2P) 8 to 12 cores (i.e., 8 to 24 cores total on box), with 16 to 32 possible in this timeframe. Each core at least 2 to 3X faster than today’s cores 16 to 48 hardware threads (logical processors) on an Intel based system 24 GB or more DDR3 system memory (at least 2X faster than today) Non-volatile supplementary memory cache On die memory controllers and networking for faster I/O 240GB+ attached solid state drive (10X to 100X+ or faster than HDDs) ~$250 to $1000 By 2012, the most basic commodity server will be a very powerful box in today’s terms. Processing speed is understated by simply counting future cores or hardware threads. Inherently faster cores, algorithmic throughput improvements, the ability to offload specialized processing to dedicated processing units on chip, faster DDR3 memory, faster I/O, larger on-chip memory caches, faster interconnects, and faster solid state drives will combine to boost performance dramatically. Unless software/workload demand for compute resources grows drastically, by 2012 to 2015, the motivation within IT departments to seek much higher consolidation ratios to boost hardware utilization is inevitable. New memory hierarchies with non-volatile RAM in between cache and main memory are an important and far reaching change (2 to 8 way box) (8 to 24 way box, with performance perhaps roughly comparable to a 24 to 72 way box from circa 2008) Basic Commodity Server (speculative)

Huh !!! Low Cost Server

Market Overview - Low End Server Single Socket, Multi Core and Hyper threading Processors Typically <$1K price points, server grade hardware platform Continued decline in server hardware ASPs Server Hardware Windows XP/Vista installed on Servers used as Workstation. IT Investments drivers tied to applications and resource sharing Multi workloads support and on current software requirements Scenario and Workloads Small Business typically 1-25 employees Channel driven purchase, OEM, VAR and system builders Hardware Segment and Customer Segment not defined by boundaries Customer Segments and Geographies

Chanel Convenience, OEM distribution only User based licensing models Pricing proportionate to server hardware segment

Searched for a file…… that was on a co-workers laptop ? Struggled to connect your PC to a printer ? Had to copy data on a USB stick to printing ? Walk over to a specific PC to access an email account or an accounting package ? Not been able to respond to your customers because your IT was “not available ” How many times have you

What is a server ? The heart of your Local Network Designed for simultaneous use by multiple users Highly reliable Helps you quickly share information and resources Helping your people be more productive The heart of your Local Network Designed for simultaneous use by multiple users Highly reliable Helps you quickly share information and resources Helping your people be more productive File Sharing Multi User Access Printer/Scanner/Fax Sharing

Can’t a desktop do this for me ? “Personal Computers” - not designed to be simultaneously used by multiple users Servers are much more reliable as compared to a desktop

Are Servers too complex ?
