Inherently faster cores, algorithmic throughput improvements, the ability to offload specialized processing to dedicated processing units on chip, faster DDR3 memory, faster I/O, larger on-chip memory caches, faster interconnects, and faster solid state drives will combine to boost performance dramatically. Unless software/workload demand for compute resources grows drastically, by 2012 to 2015, the motivation within IT departments to seek much higher consolidation ratios to boost hardware utilization is inevitable.
