2 TB: A Silent Global Epidemic  1/3 of the world’s population infected  8 million new cases of active disease per year  2-3 million deaths per year

3 TB: 2010 Missouri Statistics  107 cases of active TB  2,732 cases of latent TB  Increased risk in immune- compromised, persons born outside of the US and minorities  On average $10,000 will be spent treating each case, up to $250,000 for a multi-drug resistant case

4 A person with Latent TB Infection (LTBI)  Has TB bacteria in his/her body that are alive but inactive  Does not feel sick and is NOT CONTAGIOUS  May become sick if the bacteria become active in his/her body  Should consider treatment for LTBI to prevent active TB disease

5 A person with Active TB Disease  Has active TB bacteria in his/her body  Feels sick and experiences symptoms such as coughing, fever, and weight loss  May spread TB bacteria to others  Needs treatment to cure active TB disease
