2 D.O. and Osteopathic Medicine  Doctor of Medicine (MD)  Typically referred to as “Allopathic Medicine”  Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)  Typically referred to as “Osteopathic Medicine”  DOs have the same practice rights as MDs  DOs practice in any and all specialties of medicine

10 Osteopathic Medicine in the 20 th century and beyond  Osteopathy becomes Osteopathic Medicine  DO’s were granted full practice rights in the U.S.  Now 74,000 DOs practice anywhere in any specialty.  60% practice in primary care – related to the Osteopathic Philosophy  1 in 5 medical students is in a DO Program  MSUCOM is the only school with both DO and MD tracks, where students take most of their classes together
