The Eumetcal Objectives (1) Respond to the training needs of EUMETNET NMSs Serve as the European virtual training organisation Provide forum for the creation and exchange of training resources

The Eumetcal Objectives (2) Provide a mechanism whereby European NMSs collaborate to enhance their training capabilities on a long term basis Provide evolving technologies used for education and training Cover the whole field of meteorology and hydrology

Roger’s questions from Tuesday: What do we do? Why do we do it? (How can we achieve this?)

The principal goal of Eumetcal is to help the NHMS in the training of their meteorological staff.

Some ways how we try to achieve this 1.Annual workshop for the exchange of training resources, ideas and techniques 2.Themed Resource Working Groups 3.Help and advise in course and workshop planning 4.Eumetcal courses 5.Technical solutions

Eumetcal courses 2009-2010 2009: –Radar Course (DWD) –Satellite Course (Eumetsat & DWD) –NWP Course (FMI) 2010: –Radar course (November -> Feb 2011)

Other courses 2009-2010 2009: –Course on Flash (target group: web content developers, trainers) Dec 9-11 2010 (tbd): –Moodle course ? –MS Canada Radar Course; open for Eumetcal members, spring 2010 –Co-operation with EUMeTrain Event weeks (High Impact Weather WG) –Co-operation with WMO trainers’ seminar (PATT?)

How to contribute Participating in Eumetcal Workshop Sending participants to Eumetcal courses Appointing members to Themed Resource Working Groups Suggesting and informing the Programme of new ideas and new developments in meteorology By sharing the training material

Do we need Eumetcal?  Current Eumetcal project was agreed for 5 years (Phase 3) in 2006 –July 2007-June 2012: mid-term end of this year  What did we get/ learn from it – Vesa’s presentation  Can we/ Should we draw a new project building up on this experience? –The answer has to come from Eumetnet members –We have to demonstrate that we can deliver more in a more cost-effective way as a network than on our own

Who is Eumetcal for?  First target to be identified has been the community of forecasters –Small group, attracting little interest from the academic cummunity, hence the need for collaborative work –Are there other such groups we should address? NWP scientists?  Some themed working groups have been quite successful in building up courses of interest to participants from different members –Need to build up on successful experience  Should Eumetcal work more as a training support for other Eumetnet projects?

What do members expect from Eumetcal?  New training courses? In which areas?  New training material? –Easy-to-recycle (Scenari?)  Training the trainors?  Collaborative working environment – including common rules/ tools to exchange material?  How can we get more input from decision makers/ governors/ NMHS senior management?

How should Eumetcal work?  Themed working groups: how to make them more effective?  Need to clarify the role of different bodies in terms of training (Eumetrain, Eumetsat, ECMWF, Eumetcal)  How do we attract sponsors (mostly Eumetnet members) while developing a more open policy? –Learn from COMET  Can we expect our trainers to do the job? Or is outsourcing some of the development an alternative?
