2 2 Course Objective: At the end of this course, students are able to acquire subject matter expertise and greater proficiency in English as the medium of instruction.

3 3 Course Synopsis This course discusses the rationale of using content areas in English language teaching; the approaches to content-based language instruction; content-based teaching models; and the development and use of relevant teaching materials and resources.

4 4 Course Content: 1. Introduction to content-based second language instruction (CBSLI) Introduction to content based instruction; Rationale for integrating language and content in ESL; language learning through language use.

5 5 2. General principles in CBSLI Teacher characteristics; three content-based teaching models at the school and tertiary level; a comparison of features. 3. Theme-based language instruction in specific content areas Theme-based models in the ESL context; practical considerations in the implementation of theme-based programmes

6 6 4. Commentaries on EST, EteMs, ESP Description of each programme; distinguishing features and characteristics of each programme; current news and articles pertaining to the implementation of the programmes; evaluating its effectiveness in the ESL context.

7 7 5. Content-based materials development and adaptation Selecting materials; supplementing with language teaching materials; adapting and developing materials; guidelines on making decisions concerning text selection.

8 8 6. Integrating language and content- instruction: strategies and techniques Integrated language and content approach; factors to consider on implementing an integrated approach for language and content; preparation for the integrated approach.

9 9 7. Motivating students Helping the low English proficiency students adjust to the classroom; adjusting teaching style; teaching multilevel class. 8. Developing lesson plans for integrated content-based language instruction Standard procedures for developing lesson plans for CBSLI; lesson plan format; sample content-based materials and lesson plans.

11 11 Assessment ASSIGNMENT 1 (20%) You will be expected to reflect on your teaching experiences. When you consider your experiences in a teaching situation, or one you are expected to teach in, do you think that content based instruction specifically in the ESL context is likely to be equally effective for all proficiency levels and for teaching all skills?

12 12 ASSIGNMENT 2(30%) You will be expected to write a lesson plan on how you will integrate language skills and content instruction into your teaching. Decide on a specific theme, vocabulary to be used, the necessary materials, and the basic procedure as well as extension activities (if necessary). You are advised to follow the lesson plan format presented in the EDU 3230 module.

13 13 How your assignments will be evaluated: level of factual knowledge ability to synthesise different aspects of the work covered during the semester skill at constructing an argument to defend your view on a given topic ability to produce an essay style answer within a definite, limited time frame

14 Midterm Assessment (30%) A combination of MCQs and short essay questions. Final Exam (30%): A combination of multiple choice and short answer questions. 14
