Orso University

ASK Which of the five areas is most likely to flood? Which of the five areas have the least crime? What are the roads and traffic like in the five areas? Which area will be the safest during a hurricane? Which area has the cheapest land? Are there any fault lines near the five locations?

Acquire-Floodplains Type of floodplain Student-created explanation of floodplain Locations of floodplain in Harris County Explanation of potential flooding Valley Floodplain This floodplain has creak valleys and the ground is often more sloped then flat. These floodplains are mostly in the Northwestern part of Harris County. The flooding can last up to a couple days and can also be very deep. Major River Floodplain The floodplain occurs along a river, and can be very fast and deep. Along the San Jacinto River The flooding in this area can last for weeks. Shallow Floodplain This floodplain occurs when channels reach their limit. These floodplains are present in many areas of Harris County. Flooding usually lasts for a couple hours, but thousands of business's and homes can be affected. Coastal Floodplain During a hurricane or an unusually high tide, buildings close to the ground can flood. The Southeastern part of Harris County. Low-lying structures near the coast can be affected. Ground subsidence can result in the coastal areas flooding more severely and frequently. 5 th Scenario When rainfall exceeds the capacity of ditches and sewers, the water overflows into the streets and can flood homes and buildings. This kind of flooding is not restricted to any part of Harris County. It can happen anywhere. Residences not near a bayou or creak can be affected if there is too much rainfall. Q. What are the three different categories of floods. Rank them in order from strongest to weakest. A. 1.500 Year Flood 2.100 Year Flood 3.10 Year Flood

Acquire-Flooding Data LocationType of floodplainWatershedFlooding Threat Level Bayside (La Porte, TX)  12328 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX 500 Year Floodplain NE Houston (Huffman, TX)  12688 FM 1960, Huffman, TX 100 Year Floodplain W. 5 Acquire- Hurricane Data LocationCategory of hurricane that would require an evacuation Storm surge height that would flood the campus Hurricane Threat Level Bayside (La Porte, TX)  12328 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX Category 3-54.48- 22.4 NE Houston (Huffman, TX)  12688 FM 1960, Huffman, TX NoneNot Affected W. Tomball (Tomball, TX)  29608 Liberty Ln., Tomball, TX NoneNot Affected Downtown East (Houston, TX)  650 Oats Rd., Houston, TX Category 4-5 Downtown Central (Houston, TX)  1400 Travis St., Houston, TX None What is a storm surge? A large amount of water that hits the coastline where a hurricane is coming through. Why is storm surge such a huge problem in the Gulf of Mexico instead of places like the Atlantic Ocean? There is lower pressure in the Gulf of Mexico. Explain the three causes of storm surge. 1.When low pressure builds, water from the ocean is sucked to the middle of the storm. 2.Hurricanes 3.Wave and tide action What makes storm surge so devastating? When the surge reaches the coast, it destroys everything in its path, and buildings that aren’t specifically designed to handle a storm surge will get crushed.

Acquire- Fault Data LocationFaults Nearby (High, Medium, Low) Projected Repair Costs Bayside (La Porte, TX)  12328 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX Ship Channel Battleground Pelly Magnolia NE Houston (Huffman, TX)  12688 FM 1960, Huffman, TX W. The images included on the map are examples of which kind of weathering? G. How far are Harris County’s faults moving per year? H. How would faults and weathering impact your University?
