1 Walking in the Light 1 John 1:5-7
Sermon preached at West Side church of Christ on March 5, 2012 PM Print Slides: 1,15,19 Note: Graphic created by Jeremiah Cox 1 John 1:5-7

2 1 John 1:5-7 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

4 1 John 1:5-7 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

5 Psalm 119:63 I am a companion of all who fear You, And of those who keep Your precepts.

6 Ephesians 2:19-22 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

1 John 1:7; Psalm 119:63; Ephesians 2:19-22 The Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from our sins 1 John 1:7; John 6:53-56; 1 Peter 1:17-19

8 1 John 1:5-7 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

9 John 6:53-56 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.”

10 1 Peter 1:17-19 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

1 John 1:7; Psalm 119:63; Ephesians 2:19-22 The Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from our sins 1 John 1:7; John 6:53-56; 1 Peter 1:17-19 We Rejoice and are Exalted Psalm 89:15-18; Phil. 2:14-18; Matt. 23:10-12

12 Psalm 89:15-18 Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! They walk, O LORD, in the light of Your countenance. 16 In Your name they rejoice all day long, And in Your righteousness they are exalted. 17 For You are the glory of their strength, And in Your favor our horn is exalted. 18 For our shield belongs to the LORD, And our king to the Holy One of Israel.

13 Philippians 2:14-18 Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. 17 Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.

14 Matthew 23:10-12 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. 11 "But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 "And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

15 Walking in the Light Fellowship with other Christians
1 John 1:7; Psalm 119:63; Ephesians 2:19-22 The Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from our sins 1 John 1:7; John 6:53-56; 1 Peter 1:17-19 We Rejoice and are Exalted Psalm 89:15-18; Phil. 2:14-18; Matt. 23:10-12 We have no Occasion for Stumbling 1 John 2:8-11; Jer. 10:23-24; 2 Peter 1:10-11

16 1 John 2:8-11 Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. 9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

17 Jeremiah 10:23-24 O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. 24 O LORD, correct me, but with justice; Not in Your anger, lest You bring me to nothing.

18 2 Peter 1:10-11 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

19 May we all “walk in the light as He is in the light”
Conclusion It is only in God’s illumination that we have the ability to direct our steps, and the benefits of God’s protection. May we all “walk in the light as He is in the light” Sermon preached at West Side church of Christ on March 5, 2012 PM Print Slides: 1, Note: Graphic created by Jeremiah Cox
