2  Warming up  What do you think a good friend should be like?(Please give me your opinion)  Everyone has a different idea about the definition of the friendship. Usually the friendship is limited to the human beings.However, learning from today’ lesson,we can extend the range of the friends. Not only the human but also the things or the animals could become our friends. Do you want to get the details? Now open your book and look at the new lesson Good Friends  Skim the reading part and answer the following questions. You can first try your best to guess the words which you don’t know

4  Words & Expressions fond adj 喜爱的, 多情的, 喜欢的 be fond of 喜欢, 喜好 ( 固定短语 ) survive ( vt &vi) continue to live or exist e.g. 他在这次车祸中幸存. He survived the crash (Not he survived from the crash) 许多古怪的风俗从早些时候流传下来. Many strange customs have survived from earlier times hunt (vt&vi) chase (wild animals or game) and try to kill or capture them, for food or sport go hunting 去打猎 ~ (for sb/sth )=search for (sb/sth);try to find sb/sth e.g. It is comparative in hunting for a job The police are hunting an escaped criminal share ~(sth)(with sb) 与某人分享某物 share a bed,room,house,etc

5  Grammar Direct & Indirect speech There are two ways employed when people report someone’s speech, that is, Direct speech & Indirect speech. There are two ways employed when people report someone’s speech, that is, Direct speech & Indirect speech. a. Direct speech is to report someone’s saying originally by putting it in Double Quotation(“ “) 双引号 e.g. He said," The committee are quarrelling among themselves.” e.g. He said," The committee are quarrelling among themselves.” b. Contrary to Direct speech,in Indirect speech we should use some reporting words( 引述词 ) to realize the transformation from Direct speech into Indirect speech.Different kinds of sentences require different Reporting words to realize the transformation from Direct speech into Indirect speech.Different kinds of sentences require different Reporting words a) Declarative sentence( 陈述句 ) Reporting word THAT (it can also be omitted) Reporting word THAT (it can also be omitted) e.g. He said,”The secretary has turned down the proposal.” e.g. He said,”The secretary has turned down the proposal.” → He said( that) the secretary had turned down the proposal. (Indirect Speech) → He said( that) the secretary had turned down the proposal. (Indirect Speech) b) Interrogative sentence( 疑问句 ) I. general interrogative sentence ( 一 般疑问句 ) or additional interrogative sentence( 附加疑问句 ) Reporting word WHETHER or IF Reporting word WHETHER or IF e.g. “ Does he really mean it? ” → I wondered whether /if he really meant it e.g. “ Does he really mean it? ” → I wondered whether /if he really meant it “ They live in groups, don't they? ” → He asked whether /if they lived in groups. “ They live in groups, don't they? ” → He asked whether /if they lived in groups. II. As for the transmittion from Direct speech into Indirect speech,we still have a lot of work to do.And also it is not an easy job.Today,we just stop here, getting the general idea about it.Next wewill contact with the rules deeply including the exchange of persons and tense.
