2 The earth spins and it changes from day to night every day
The earth spins and it changes from day to night every day. Night time and day time happen at different times depending on where you live on Earth so we need different time zones.

3 There is heaps of different time zones
There is heaps of different time zones. If we had one single time zone for Earth afternoon would be the middle of the day in some places but it would be morning or evening and the middle of the night in others. Since different parts of the earth enter and exit daylight at different times we need different time zones.

4 Time zones are decided by the members of parliament.

5 There are 360 different time zones in the world.

6 This is the Royal Greenwich Observatory in England
This is the Royal Greenwich Observatory in England. It is the place where all time zones in the world are measured. Melbourne is at Greenwich Mean Time +10 hours. You might see it written as GMT+10.

7 The country that has the most time zones is France
The country that has the most time zones is France. It has 12 time zones. The United States is the runner-up with 11 time zones, then Russia with 9.

8 What time is it? In Melbourne it is 9:26am In Perth it is 7:26am
In Darwin it is 8:56am

9 There is an imaginary line on the Earth called the International date line. This line changes the date by one day.

Time zones can make a difference in our lives. If we need to talk to someone overseas they might be sleeping.

When my Dad went to Iraq it was different for us and him. Mum and I wanted to call him but he was sleeping when we were awake and we were sleeping when he was awake. It was very hard.

14 We get jet lag when we travel through different time zones, especially when we are flying. Jet lag makes us very tired.

15 In summer, we put our clocks forward one hour
In summer, we put our clocks forward one hour. This is so we can enjoy more time in the evenings when it is still daylight.
