2 Challenges in the Offshore Oil and Gas Sector Offshore is booming alongside the tremendous growth in blue water shipping around the world The offshore industry well recognises the challenge and the need for co-operation between stakeholders like never before - In Australia, through APPEA's Annual H&S Conference early August in Perth involving the HSR through all levels of management and other stakeholders, a comprehensive review of the Industry's current performance and improvement opportunities took place. Aus lags (APPEA LTIFR = 1.53 Other World Oil & Gas Production areas LTIFR = 1.08 which is 50% worse) and APPEA will soon come forward with industry wide agreed targets for measurable improvement in terms of preventing harm to people and towards increased co-operation. Forums like Drill Safe and Marine Safe will be valuable venues for participants and stakeholders in securing the goals earnestly sought.

7 Major Challenges Reducing the number of ‘minor’ injuries occurring during routine maintenance and day to day ship operations, eg manual handling, slips, trips and falls, struck by and struck against. Ensuring seafarers new to the offshore industry are as best prepared for the ‘hostile’ environment they will face in the industry Preparing newly promoted senior officers for their role and safety responsibilities

8 What are we doing to manage these challenges Greater emphasis on in depth induction before joining vessels More comprehensive shipboard inductions Greater emphasis on risk assessment, Job Hazard Analysis, tool box meetings Endeavouring to make step back 5 X 5 a ‘habit’ Introduce Safety Coaches and Mentors

9 Sea Staff Seminar – July 2007 Sea Staff Seminar – Yarra Valley, Victoria. The 2 nd 2007 Sea Staff Seminar saw a predominantly young and newly recruited sea farer representation. With an ambient temperature of approximately 17 degrees, clear sky and well catered meals, crew took part in interactive activities including: Planning to Achieve our Vision of “Zero Injuries” Safety Leadership Effective Work Planning Risk Assessment Having Safety Conversations Giving / Receiving Safety Related Feedback to / from Workmates Management Systems / Inductions NEXT SEMINAR COMMENCES 26 TH NOVEMBER
