6 Some observations… Many agencies ahead of the discretionary curve Total research “cut” (?) ~$1.3 billion,1.9% Both basic and applied While development boosted

7 Agency observations NSF: Only SBE increased (NCSES) ENG flat (except SBIR) NSF-wide initiatives: boosts for neuroscience, Innovation Corps NASA: Space Technology (+23%), Heliophysics, Commercial Crew (+22%) escape the knife Dept. of Transportation: Highway R&D and Intelligent Transportation Systems boosted (19%) High-performance rail R&D

9 Looking ahead… Congress marking up at current cap level Senate: no budget resolution House budget? Moving quickly? Can R&D stay ahead of the curve?
