2 Definitions Substance Abuse- Any unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for nonmedical purposes. Illegal Drugs- Against the law for people of any age to manufacture, possess, buy or sell. Gateway Drugs- Drugs that often lead to other serious and dangerous drug use.

3 Why Do People Use Drugs? They see family or friends using them
They feel pressured to use drugs and don’t know how to say no They want to fit in, relax, or seem mature They see drugs glamorized in pop culture They seek a solution to boredom They are trying to escape from their problems

4 Consequences in Substance Abuse
Tolerance - The body of the abuser begins to develop tolerance to the drug, needing more and more of it to get the same effect. Physiological Dependence - The body develops a chemical need for the drug. Withdrawal - When a person stops using a drug, the symptoms that occur include nervousness, insomnia, vomiting, chills, and even death. Addiction - Becoming overly dependent on the drug.

5 Costs of Substance Abuse
Drugs and Pregnancy 5% of the 4 million women that give birth a year have used an illegal drug while pregnant. Babies are often born addicted to the drug that their mothers ingested during pregnancy. Costs to Others Illegal drugs burden American Society with an estimated $67 billon in health, social and criminal costs every year.

6 Types of Psychoactive Drugs
Depressants- Drugs that tend to slow down the central nervous system. Barbiturates Tranquilizers Methaqualone Stimulants- Drugs that speed up the central nervous system. Amphetamines Methamphetamine Cocaine

7 Types of Psychoactive Drugs Cont.
Narcotics- Drugs derived from the opium plant that have a sedative effect. Morphine Codeine Heroin Hallucinogens- Drugs that alter moods, thoughts and sense perceptions. PCP LSD Mescaline

8 Steroids Anabolic Steroids- Synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone. Steroid use causes: Mood Swings Abnormally violent and aggressive behavior (“roid rage”) High Blood Pressure Acne Baldness Heart Disease Depression

9 Cannabis Derivatives Cannabis - scientific name for the hemp plant.
Marijuana - Cannabis that is smoked, eaten or drunk. Hashish - the dark brown resin collected from the tops of the cannabis plant. Effects of Cannabis: Lower Body Temperature Stimulated Appetite Drastic Personality Changes Memory Loss Damaged Respiratory System

10 Inhalants Inhalants- Substances with breathable fumes that are sniffed and inhaled to give a hallucinogenic or mind-altering high. Immediate Effects: Nausea Sneezing Coughing Nosebleeds Fatigue Lack of coordination Loss of appetite Long Term Effects: Depresses the central nervous system Liver and Kidney Damage Hearing Loss Brain Damage

11 Designer and Look-Alike Drugs
Designer Drugs- Synthetic substances meant to imitate the effects of narcotics and hallucinogens. These drugs are meant to be several hundred times stronger than then drugs that they are meant to imitate. Look-Alike Drugs- Drugs made so as to physically resemble specific illegal drugs.

12 Peer Pressure Commitment to Be Drug-Free
Find healthful ways to have fun and enjoy life. Stick with people who know how to have fun without drugs. Think about your true purpose and how you can put your life and talents to good use. Get lots of physical exercise. Community Efforts Drug Watches- Organized community efforts by neighborhood residents to patrol, monitor, report and otherwise help try to stop drug deals. Make and keep your own personal commitment to stay drug- free.
