1 Agricultural Careers Forest Ranger By: Dr. Frank Flanders and Trisha Rae Stephens Georgia Agricultural Education Curriculum Office Georgia Department of Education June 2005 START

2 Job Duties & Responsibilities Maintain campgrounds, walking trails, and surrounding areas. Conduct forest fire prevention programs. Enforce all state laws and regulations. Monitor the safety and well being of the public using the state’s forest resources. Educate the public on proper use of the park and protection of the state’s natural resources. Assist with planning and constructing new facilities and trails. Maintain park records and develops educational programs. Conduct search and rescue operations. Supervise the use of public lands, the leasing of lands and the sale of timber crops. Supervise a team of assistant rangers, forestry technicians and other workers.

3 Qualities and Skills Good physical condition and stamina are needed for the outdoor work. Ability to walk long distances and stand for lengthy periods of time. Ability to be out in the sun and other weather conditions. Ability to work in a team and individually Ability to lead and supervise others Good public relation skills

4 Salary The average entry-level salary with a bachelors of Science is anywhere from $19,000-24,000. The average salary is in the range of $35,000 and someone with years of experience can make up to $50,000 per year.

5 Work Environment Most time is spent outdoors, although some office work is necessary Work week is typically 40 plus hours Environment can be wet, dirty, or uncomfortable Work involves evenings, weekends, and holidays

6 Becoming a Forest Ranger In high school take classes in math, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences and natural sciences. Classes in speech, communications, and forestry are also helpful. Participate in forestry competitions and activities through the National FFA Organization and 4-H. Participate in outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. Work as a seasonal ranger. Become a Junior Forest Ranger.
