5. Adventure Course At the Adventure Course, you will work as individuals and groups to solve problems and meet challenges.

6. Predator / Prey Relationships In this learning group, you will identify different ways an animal in the wilderness survives (ie: size, teeth, speed, color). Then you take those ideas and use them in an activity to help understand predator / prey relationships.

7. Orienteering Orienteering is a lot of fun. You will learn a lot of helpful tips on how to use a compass and map to find various points in the woods.

8. Pond Life Pond life is a great experience. You will learn to work together and have a magnificent time! You will have the chance to catch and identify things like nymphs, crayfish, minnows, slugs, water hoppers, and water striders. At the pond, you will also learn about the Water Cycle.

9. Stream The stream at Camp Swatara is an exciting place to be. In the stream, you will see critters such as crayfish, water striders, water pennies, and salamanders. Pollution run-off, among other topics, will be discussed.

10. Temperate Forest In the Temperate Forest learning session, you will identify the different types of trees and leaves using a dichotomous key; discuss the differences between coniferous and deciduous trees and look for examples in the forest; and discuss and find examples of producers, consumers, decomposers, and scavengers. Lastly, you will investigate the affects of trash and recycling on our environment.

11. Trails and Physical Geography Reading a variety of maps and distinguishing the purpose of each map is the objective of Trails and Physical Geography. One activity is to read the Camp Swatara’s trail map to decide which trail(s) to hike. During the hike, students will locate and identify the different trail markers and follow the hiking route on the map. Trail safety before and during the hike will also be discussed.

12. Wetlands What are the indicators that you are in the wetlands? What are three reasons wetlands are important to preserve? What can we do to preserve the wetlands? These are three important questions that will be investigated and discussed in the Wetlands learning session.

13. Meals Meals are served family style. Each table will be served and cleaned up by one person. It’s a fun time to get to know others on the camping trip and fuel up for the next activity.

14. Hiking One recreation opportunity is to hike a trail to the Rock Pile. The view is beautiful, and hikers are able to see 3 counties from that vantage point. The hike is quite rigorous, and is reserved for only those that can physically handle it. Sturdy shoes or boots, a flashlight, and water are a must for a successful and safe trip. 15. Recreation After dinner each day, there will be a time for recreation. The teachers will facilitate various activities for the students to participate in. Past activities have included, basketball, kickball, football, crafts, and hiking the mountain.

16. Special Programming Each night there will be a special program. In the past, there have been special presentations done by a man that raises snakes, Zoo America, and an organization that cares for birds of prey.

17. Campfire Each night at camp there is a huge campfire. One night there is the opportunity to cook hot dogs while the other night is devoted to making S’mores.

18. Cabin Life To the relief of many, students do not sleep in tents while at camp. Sleeping quarters are found in cozy cabins with heat and electricity. Each camper is responsible to bring their own bedding and pillow.
