8. OVERVIEW OF FIELD ASSIGNMENTS   Detailed written instructions and a scoring rubric will be given to students prior to doing the field assignment. Instructions will also be given in class at least two weeks prior to the due date. The scoring sheet should be stapled as the first page for each field assignment report. Scoring sheets will also be sent to students in an email after the first class.   Field Assignments should be emailed to Dr. Sparrow on the due date, but no later than the end of the grace period.   FA1 – Science Class Observation 75 pts. For this field assignment you will be observing a science class conducted by your field teacher. You will be identifying various instructional strategies, student responsiveness and engagement, use of inquiry, nature of science, etc. included in the lesson.   FA2 – Using a 5E Inquiry Lesson with CERR Framework 82 pts. In this field assignment you will take one of the activities from SCE 4311 and try it out as a lesson with a small group of children (five). The focus will be planning using the Four Levels of Educational Outcomes, the 5 E inquiry lesson format, and the C-E-R-R Framework.

9.  FA#3 – Creating a 5E Inquiry Lesson. There are four parts to this field assignment. PART 1: Pre-lesson planning: Environmental Resources. In keeping with our theme of sustainability, the pre-service teachers will be investigating the outside resources available at the school, around the school, and in the neighborhood. They will be also interviewing various school personnel about the availability / possibility of including elementary science investigations on sustainability or environmental themes. 60 pts PART 2: Pre-assessment (diagnostic student interviews) In Part 2 pre-service students will interview five elementary students on a selected concept and analyze the students’ knowledge (pre-assessment). 82 pts PART 3: Teaching a 5E Inquiry Lesson: The preservice teachers will create a 5E inquiry lesson based on the standards and students’ current state of knowledge 43 pts PART 4: Post Assessment and Reflection: After the lesson is taught, the pre-service teachers will again interview the students to gauge what they learned from the lesson and analyze the data. Included will be a reflection and analysis of the pre-service teacher’s lesson and teaching experience. 60 pts
