1 Warm Up Using your Science World magazine find the article Is Screen Time Making You Sick? Fill in the answers to the statements on the next slide using the word bank and magazine to help.

2 Is Screen Time Making You Sick?
The body’s ___________ responds to light exposure . The hormone _________ helps make you sleepy. A __________ is a factor that can cause cancer. Compared with people who work during the day, people who work nigh shifts have _________ rate of cancer. Lab animals exposed to light at the wrong time of day have ______________ levels of melatonin. A widespread health problem found in a large part of a population is a ___________. Sunlight contains ___________ light, which helps keep us alert. Compared with other colors of visible light, blue light has a short _______________. Waves are arranged by wavelength on the ________. Exposure to bright light in the ___________ helps to keep the circadian system running smoothly. Word Bank Amplitude electromagnetic spectrum lower red Blue equal melatonin serotonin Carcinogen evening morning watt Circadian system higher pandemic wavelength

3 Atomic Theory

4 Greek era Democritus "by convention bitter, by convention sweet, but in reality atoms and void" 1704 Isaac Newton Proposed a mechanical universe with small solid masses in motion. 1803 John Dalton Proposed an "atomic theory" with spherical solid atoms based upon measurable properties of mass. 1869 Dmitri Mendeleev Arranged elements into 7 groups with similar properties. He discovered that the properties of elements "were periodic functions of the their atomic weights". This became known as the Periodic Law. 1873 James Clerk Maxwell Proposed electric and magnetic fields filled the void. 1905 Albert Einstein Published the famous equation E=mc 2 1922 Niels Bohr Developed an explanation of atomic structure that underlies regularities of the periodic table of elements. His atomic model had atoms built up of sucessive orbital shells of electrons. 1927 Heisenberg Described atoms by means of formula connected to the frequencies of spectral lines. Proposed Principle of Indeterminancy - you can not know both the position and velocity of a particle. 1938 Lise Meitner, Hahn , Strassman Conducted experiments verifying that heavy elements capture neutrons and form unstable products which undergo fission. This process ejects more neutrons continuing the fission chain reaction.

5 Index card inside Hamburger fold
Time Line Break Down: ~ Research your two assigned scientist and their contribution to atomic theory. ~ Using the index card provided write the main ideas of their contribution to atomic theory. Staple the index card to the inside of your yellow / orange piece of paper. (Follow example) Using the ½ piece of paper illustrate the contributing scientists. Make sure that you color this, it will be displayed in the hallway. Index card inside Hamburger fold

6 Research Requirements
Research specifics ~ Scientists Name: ~ Scientists main focus of study: (did they focus only on atoms or other sciences) ~ What contribution did the scientist make to the “Atomic Theory”? ~ Was their theory correct, or completely off base? ~ How did the scientist develop his portion of the “Atomic Theory”?
