2 Causes ● 1928 wheat crop crash o Loss of jobs o low food supply in farming areas o rapid decline of exports ● Dependence of the US o 65% of Canada’s imports and 40% of its exports were from the United States ● Dependence on Staple Products o wheat, fish, minerals, paper

3 Effects ● the gross national product dropped 40% (US 37%) ● Unemployment reached 27% ● corporate profits of $398 million in 1929 turned into losses of $98 million as prices fell ● 1/5 of the work force became dependent on the Government ● Children taken out of school, students drop out of College ● Decrease in exports (main source of Canadian income)

4 Canadian Response ● Relief program for families o Rations ● Single men sent to British Columbia ● Cuts to Health Care, Education and other social programs ● Dissatisfaction with party politics/corruption
