 In order to earn full credit for seminar participation three things are needed ◦ Frequent interaction on concepts being discussed by students and instructor ◦ Posts are on topic and contribute to the quality of the seminar ◦ Student arrives on time and stays for most of the time at least ◦ Remember: respond to my questions with an answer even if it is just with a “yes” or “no”.

 The miracle of birth is one that can be enhanced by good pre-natal care of the mother and developing fetus.  Let’s discuss some of the short term and long term implications of good pre-natal and neonatal care.

 Dilation to birth ◦ Beginning phase ◦ Active Phase ◦ Transition Phase  Birth  Expulsion of the placenta  Two deliveries are mentioned in the text this week. As you read them think about: ◦ How were they the same? ◦ How were they different?

 Discuss the types of deliveries that can occur. (Breech, Caesarean, etc.)  What are some complications and their results which can take place during delivery? For example, the text reading describes an instance in which the umbilical cord is wrapped around the infants neck resulting in oxygen deprivation.  What implications does this have for you as a childhood professional?

 APGAR  Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale  PKU testing  HIV testing  You will read the results of the testing on the two infants mentioned in the text reading this week. As you read think about: ◦ How did they differ?

 Genetic Disorders ◦ Albinism, Color blindness, Cystic fibrosis, Muscular dystrophy, Hemophilia, etc.  Chromosomal Abnormalities ◦ Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Turner syndrome, etc.  How can neonatal units try to make the first experiences of special needs infants as positive and supportive as possible?

 Discussion posts should be about 100 words in length.  If possible, include real life examples or relate the information to your reading.  You can share something with your classmates and/or ask them a question.  Try to make three posts to your classmates in response to what they have written.  Don’t forget to refer to the reading assignments!

 Who are the people that you consider to be a part of your students’ or your own child’s “village” community?  How does the Early Childhood Professional help families and the child?

 Tonight we will take a “field trip” to a Wikispace  The link is: http://ecdevelopment.wikispaces.com/Unit+2http://ecdevelopment.wikispaces.com/Unit+2  Group 1- read “10 Ways to Build Attachment with Your Baby”  Group 2 – Watch Video #1 “Songs for Special Needs Children”  Group 3 – Watch Video #2 “Baby Sign Language”  Take about 10 minutes to quickly view these and return to the seminar prepared to share at least 2 ideas that were new for you.

 Let’s discuss:  How important is the bonding process? When does this first begin?  Is it just mothers who bond with infants?

 Why is it important for the “village” to be especially supportive of the new families?  What are some things that they can do to help with this new experience?  What are some things that an Early Childhood Professional can do ?

 Developmental level checklists are “normal expectations” for a child at a certain age.  Checklists are only guidelines and should not be used to diagnose problems.  What are some ways that you as a childcare professional can support parents and families of newborns?

 Identify changes in family dynamics at birth, including bonding and reactions of the newborn, parents, siblings and extended family.  Describe the role that appropriate care plays in the life of the newborn.  Discuss the care of infants with special needs.
