The Church at Mesquite Salt & Light Matt 5.13-16

The Church at Mesquite Matthew 5 Matthew 5.13 Ye are the salt of the earth, but if the salt have lost his savor wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

The Church at Mesquite Matthew 5 Matthew 5.14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your FATHER which is in Heaven (KJV).

The Church at Mesquite Matthew 5 Notice: JESUS’ proclamation that HIS followers were to be Salt & Light immediately proceeds the conditional eschatological promises of the Beatitudes (vs. 3-10) and the preparing lesson found in vs. 11-12

The Church at Mesquite Matthew 5 Notice: In this we note that the solution that JESUS provided for religious indifference, spiritual apathy, and social injustice was for HIS followers to be Salt & Light

The Church at Mesquite Matthew 5 Notice: This is significant because the same GOD who created man is the same GOD that created the earth (which is where the element of Salt is found) and Light which was created during the creation of the earth (cf. Genesis 1)

The Church at Mesquite Matthew 5 Notice: Thus we find that JESUS was well aware of the elemental qualities of Salt & Light, and compared HIS followers to those qualities

The Church at Mesquite Matthew 5 If we are going to fully recognize the implications of JESUS’ call for HIS disciples to be Salt & Light, we must initially note the historical significance of these elements

The Church at Mesquite Matthew 5 If we are going to fully recognize the implications of JESUS’ call for HIS disciples to be Salt & Light, we must initially note the historical significance of these elements Then we can see the spiritual parallels that JESUS was making when HE referred to HIS disciples as Salt & Light

The Church at Mesquite Light In the historical context of Matthew 5 we note that they did not have electrical lighting.

The Church at Mesquite Light In the historical context of Matthew 5 we note that they did not have electrical lighting. Thus their concept of light was significantly different from ours.

The Church at Mesquite Light Before we begin to consider the significance that light had on their culture we do well to consider some of the physical properties of light.

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Reflection

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Reflection Refraction

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Reflection Refraction Dispersion

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Reflection Refraction Dispersion Interference (Constructive and Destructive)

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Reflection Light reflects off of surfaces.

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Reflection Light reflects off of surfaces. This is important because this quality in light allows us to see images in mirrors.

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection As this relates to the spiritual light that JESUS proclaimed should come from HIS followers we discover that there should be a spiritual reflection quality that comes from us even as we follow JESUS

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection In other words, as JESUS’ light reflects off of us people should be able to see HIM although they are looking at us.

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection Since the reflection quality of light allows us to see images in mirrors, it stands to reason that the reflection quality of spiritual light allows us to see the image of the light source reflecting off of the person that such light is touching

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection In this we find and can determine whose light is shining on us.

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection In this we find and can determine whose light is shining on us. If JESUS’ light is shining on us then people will be able to see HIM reflecting off of us.

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection In this we find and can determine whose light is shining on us. If JESUS’ light is shining on us then people will be able to see HIM reflecting off of us. If people can’t see JESUS light shining off of us then the facts reveal that JESUS is not our spiritual light source

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection If JESUS is not our spiritual light source (which is determined by the fact that HE is not reflecting off of us) then we have to conclude that we have another light source which proves not to be light, but rather darkness

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection JESUS noted in John 13.34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another. As I have love you, that you also love one another. By this shall all men know that you are MY disciples, if you have love one to another

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection If JESUS is our spiritual light source it will show because people will be able to see the love of JESUS reflecting off of us.

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection The love of JESUS:

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection The love of JESUS: Causes us to obey HIM (John 14.15)

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection The love of JESUS: Causes us to obey HIM (John 14.15) Causes us to leave our comfort zones to help others (Luke 10.25-37)

The Church at Mesquite Light Reflection The love of JESUS: Causes us to obey HIM (John 14.15) Causes us to leave our comfort zones to help others (Luke 10.25-37) Causes us to put others before ourselves (Philippians 2.1-5)

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Refraction

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Refraction When light bends as it passes from one medium to another, it refracts.

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Refraction When light bends as it passes from one medium to another, it refracts. This at times causes objects to seem larger than they are.

The Church at Mesquite Light Refraction As it relates to the spiritual parallel of refraction we find that as the light of JESUS shines through us unto others HIS light causes us to look differently than the people in the world.

The Church at Mesquite Light Refraction We should look differently from people in the world because the light of JESUS should be refracting off of our lives.

The Church at Mesquite Light Refraction We should look differently from people in the world because the light of JESUS should be refracting off of our lives. Thus we can determine that if JESUS is not causing us to look any different from the people in the world, then JESUS’ Light is not refracting on us

The Church at Mesquite Light Refraction JESUS proclaimed in John 8.12: I AM the light of the world, he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

The Church at Mesquite Light Refraction We can claim to be Light, and be followers of JESUS all that we want to, but if we walk in darkness (doing worldly things) rather than walking in light (doing what GOD wants us to do), but if the Light of JESUS is not refracting off of us (causing us to look different from the world) we are not of HIM

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Dispersion

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Dispersion This quality causes white light to be broken into its different colors.

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Dispersion This quality causes white light to be broken into its different colors. An example of this is the rainbow.

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion As it relates to the spiritual parallel of dispersion we find that when JESUS’ light shines through us people should be able to see HIS different qualities

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion As it relates to the spiritual parallel of dispersion we find that when JESUS’ light shines through us people should be able to see HIS different qualities Examples of this is the fruit of HIS SPIRIT (Galatians 5.22-23)

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love, Joy

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love, Joy, Peace

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, Temperance

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion As the Light of JESUS shines through us HIS different manifestations (fruit) should be able to be seen in our lives.

The Church at Mesquite Light Dispersion As the Light of JESUS shines through us HIS different manifestations (fruit) should be able to be seen in our lives. If the fruit of the Spirit are not seen, we have to conclude that JESUS’ Light is not shinning on or through us

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Interference

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Interference This describes what happens when two beams of light meet.

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Interference This describes what happens when two beams of light meet.

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Interference If the two beams enhance one another such interference is called “constructive.”

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Interference If the two beams enhance one another such interference is called “constructive.” If the two beams make one another less bright such interference is called “destructive.”

The Church at Mesquite Light Interference As it relates to the spiritual qualities of interference we will consider the constructive type

The Church at Mesquite Light Interference As children of GOD who prove to have the SPIRIT of CHRIST work together their combined Light should cause them to be stronger together than they are apart

The Church at Mesquite Light Interference Our combined efforts should be used to build the kingdom of GOD, not harm the kingdom of GOD.

The Church at Mesquite Light Interference Our combined efforts should be used to build the kingdom of GOD, not harm the kingdom of GOD. If you have the Light of CHRIST, and I have the Light of CHRIST, we should shine stronger together than we do apart.

The Church at Mesquite Light Interference If our interference is destructive (harmful to one another) then one or both of us do not have the Light of JESUS shining through us.

The Church at Mesquite Light Interference Remember, 2 Corinthians 6.14 teaches that light has no fellowship with darkness. Thus if we are not able to be in fellowship with people who have the Light of CHRIST, it is apparent that we do not have the light of CHRIST.

The Church at Mesquite Light Physical properties of Light Reflection Refraction Dispersion Interference (Constructive and Destructive)

The Church at Mesquite Light Matthew 5.14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
