1 Students will analyze and discuss the impact the death of Jesus had on the spread of Christianity

2 Warm Up:  Why do you think Jesus was crucified?

3 Homework:  Read page 168-175 define the 7 key terms and places and answer questions 1-4 ALL PARTS

4 There is always a reason  Crucifixion was used as a form of punishment and deterrent.  Those crucified would not die quickly, they would suffocate over long periods of time. Criminals crucified on the side of the road that leads into a city. This acted as a warning to any visitors who entered to follow their rules.

5 Before Jesus died  Jesus knew he was going to be killed so he held a dinner with his friends and gave one last teaching. This is known as the last supper.

6 On the day of his death  Jesus was killed as a result of people believing he was a liar and that he was deceiving people.  His punishment was broken in 14 parts called the stations of the cross.

7 Turn and talk  Why do you think Jesus was punished so harshly?

8 After his death  After Jesus died it is said that his body was removed from the cross. Cleaned and buried in a tomb behind a huge stone.

9 The resurrection  It is believed that 3 days after his death Jesus rose from the dead. This is called the resurrection. Resurrection: revival from inactivity and disuse  After he rose from the dead he visited certain disciples and gave them instructions on how to spread his teachings.  This is why Christians celebrate Easter

10 Work time:  Using the source document answer the assigned questions below Group AGroup B Group C How many followers did Jesus have when he died? In what time span was their the greatest increase of followers? Jesus was killed in 33AD what connection can be made between his death and the change in Christians? Looking at the chart. What prediction can be made for 50 years after Jesus’ death? Why do you think there was a slight drop in the number of followers Jesus had right after his death? What events do you think lead up to the surge in the popularity of Christianity?
