1 Research Endeavors with Multipurpose Analytical High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope Kalpana S. Katti, North Dakota State University Fargo, DMR 0821655 JEOL JEM-2100 *200 kV high-resolution LaB6 instrument Magnification range 50X – 1.5 million X Resolution 0.19 nm (1.9 Angstroms) Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) Remotely operable via Internet Details of bacterial cells entrapped in the interior (left) and rupturing at the surface (right) of a polymer bead. Multiscale Modeling in Bone (PIs Katti and Katti) Development of multiscale robust models that incorporate molecular level interactions and mechanics (from steered molecular dynamics) into macroscale finite element models is the focus of these studies. The models need to be verified through experimental studies on human bones The use of high resolution EELS with high resolution imaging will help provide necessary parameters of collagen interaction with hydroxyapatite in the human bone. Cell Entrapment for Wastewater Remediation (PI Khan) Cell entrapment (cells are immobilized in a polymeric medium) is one of the most widely used biotechnologies in several industries. This research investigates the physiological aspects of entrapped cells used in wastewater treatment. These characteristics, particularly cell surface and membrane, cannot be examined without a high-resolution transmission electron micro scope. Nanoparticles for Ground Water Contaminent Remediation (PI Bezbaruah) This project is focused on evaluation of entrapment and encapsulation of iron nanoparticles and microorganisms into calcium alginate beads and capsules. High resolution TEM and STEM BF/DF/HAADF imaging and EELS are essential for investigation of those bead-capsule systems. Novel Functional Coatings and Nanocomposiites (PI Webster) This research involves the preparation of novel functional polymer systems, self- stratified coating systems, and nanocomposites. HR-TEM allows a qualitative understanding of structure through direct visualization at the nanometer scale. Nanoclay-polymer

2 Education Endeavors with Analytical High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscope Kalpana S. Katti, North Dakota State University Fargo, DMR 0821655 Broader Impacts The new high-resolution transmission electron microscope system (JEOL JEM-2100) will support existing collab- orative research and education and stimulate new cooperative programs in the university community and beyond. Remote operation from on- or off- campus (anyplace with Internet availability!) will provide easy entrée to a state-of-the-art microscope, facili- tating remote access for North Dakota tribal colleges and high schools through the NATURE program (Nur- turing American Tribal Undergraduate Research and Education), as well as other regional colleges and universi- ties, and sustaining and extending our outreach to K-12 students and teachers across the region. ▲North Dakota Tribal Colleges 2009 NATURE program participants► school students demonstrate micro- scope operation for ND Governor John Hoeven at the Legis- lative Showcase in the State Capitol ◄North Dakota high-
