5 The early 20th century was marked by enormous industrial, economic and social change, and artists of this time sought to portray the exhaustion and cultural exuberance of the American landscape through realistic portrayals. The Ashcan school led the movement in American Realism, seeking to capture the feel of turn of the 20th century New York City through realistic portraits of both the rich and working class. Other artists were highly influenced by modernist styles arriving from Europe, such as the cubist and abstract paintings. Art of the American Southwest, such as the work of Georgia O'Keefe, developed a unique style focusing on the native people and landscapes of the region, and was used to entice people to come west. The Harlem Renaissance was marked by a new generation of prolific African- American artists who used art to combat racism and oppression. Sculpture in the early 20th century was marked by Modern Classicism, as well as the early beginnings of art deco. Painting and Sculpture Free to share, print, make copies and changes. 6 In the early 20th century, Alfred Steiglitz led the Photo-Secession movement which used pictorialism, soft focus, and picture manipulation to promote photography as a fine art. Many photographers such as Lewis Hine sought to capture everyday life of American people, both the wealthy and the poor, in a realistic and often gritty fashion. Commercial photography also expanded during the era, and was commonly featured in magazines and advertisements. Toward the late 1920s and early 1930s, change in the social landscape led to the development of the Precisionist Movement, which rejected the pictorialism of the Photo-Secession movement and instead used sharp focus and carefully framed images. 12 Power house mechanic working on steam pump by Lewis Hine (1920) Lewis Hine's 1920 Power house mechanic working on steam pump, one of his work portraits, shows a working class American in an industrial setting. The carefully posed subject, a young man with wrench in hand, is hunched over, surrounded by the machinery that defines his job. But while constrained by the machinery (almost a metal womb), the man is straining against it—muscles taut, with a determined look—in an iconic representation of masculinity.
