1 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Education and Community Engagement: Building and sustaining educational and community focused programing is crucial to the sustainability and relevance of the BSO and Orchestral Music in the 21 st Century

2 Why Education Matters to the BSO Because – on the most basic level – education mattered to the founders of the BSO who stressed its importance in the founding charter. 3 How the BSO is fulfilling its charter To encourage the education and development of skilled musicians or persons having musical talent, either vocal or instrumental, and to promote the welfare of musical artists and the development and education of artists in related fields;

12 BSO Music Educators Academy & Summer Side-by-Side July 7-12, 2014 Pilot Program Highlights 3 graduate credits offered through UMBC Case Scaglione, conductor Wide array of classes: secondary instruments, piano workshops, conducting, music technology, ensemble arranging, rehearsal techniques, improvisation Approved course by the Maryland State Department of Education New track for non-professional musicians

13 Lifelong Education Programs Road Scholar Osher at Johns Hopkins Road Scholar, a national travel program, partners with the BSO to provide behind- the-scenes experiences of the BSO. Activities include classes by BSO Musicians and Staff, tours of Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, OrchKids program visit, private BSYO Chamber Concerts, exclusive access to rehearsals, and attendance of BSO concerts. Soloist Week April 9 to 13, 2014 Osher, a national lifelong learning program, partners with the BSO to offer a series of workshops. Workshop topics include BSO Staff insights and musicians’ perspective on select repertoire. Series culminates in a BSO concert. April 3 to May 4, 2014 6-week program in Baltimore 1 day at Strathmore
