1 Aim: How do I respond to the critical lens prompt? What is a critical lens?A critical lens is an aphorism which serves as a lens ( a prism) through which to view a work of literature. HW #5- offer an interpretation of the following quotation: “What lasts is what is written. We look to literature to find the essence of an age.”- Peter Brodie List two works which you might for analysis through this quotation/concept.

2 Aim: How do I respond to the critical lens prompt? How does the lens serve as a prompt to an essay? The lens is the evaluative prompt. You determine what the quotation means, whether or not you agree with it as it applies to two works of literature, and how the rhetorical and literary device choices made by the respective authors works for each work.

Guidelines: Provide a valid interpretation of the critical lens that clearly establishes the criteria for analysis. Indicate whether you agree or disagree with the statement as you interpreted it. Use Snow Falling on Cedars and any other major work to support your opinion. Use the criteria in the critical lens to analyze the novel. Do not summarize the plot but use at least four specific references to appropriate literary elements (for example theme, characterization, structure, language, point of view) to develop your analysis. Organize your ideas in a unified and coherent manner. Specify title and author. Follow the conventions of standard written English
