MAN UP BIBLE SERIES IRON MAN 1 – A Call to Mentor Lesson Six

The Real World At Camp Kuratli in Oregon I was always amazed at the way Martin Cooper would pull in the fish out of that lake. I would be using my special spinner and catching nothing. I would see Marty pulling in fish after fish. I would go over and ask him what he was using. He would show me his special lure and give me one to try, Bam! Fish would start hitting on my line. The next day I would be out and Marty is pulling in fish and fish. Me Nothing. I go over and he is using a different lure. He gives me one and I start catching fish. The next day he is catching fish with the same lure and me nothing. I ask and he tells me, “Got to throw it over in this area where the water is deeper and the big fish are waiting.” I realized fishing is not just throwing a line in the water. You have to know the fish. It is the same with finding a mentor.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28 New International Version (NIV) Final Instructions 12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. 25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us. 26 Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. The Real Word

Real Talk Do you have Someone older who mentors you? Do you have Someone your age that encourages you? Do you have someone younger that you mentor?

Real Steps Places to find a mentor: 1. A Professor at a College. 2. A Pastor or Corps Officer. 3. Co Worker – Supervisor. 4. As a Christian you need a Christian Mentor. 5. Pray for a Mentor. God answers Prayer. 6. Find a Paul to mentor you. Older to lead you. 7. Find a Timothy to Mentor. Younger to lead. 8. Find a Barnabas that encourages you. A Peer Your age. 9. Open your eyes to see the mentors around you.

Time to Close So here we are looking at places to find a mentor. The best place to start is on your knees. Prayer is the key to finding the next step in this mentor process. But you can not just pray you also have to step out and meet men in your circle of influence. I can guarantee you that going through the motions of life without a mentor is way too hard. Doing nothing is a sure remedy to failure. Another thing to think about is finding a Paul, someone older who can share their experience with you. Have a Timothy, someone younger than you that you can share your experiences with and lastly find a Barnabas, someone your age to encourage you. If you will pray and find these relationships the Lord will be praised and blessed. Time to MAN UP!
