Round House The Fremantle Round House is the oldest building still standing in Western Australia. It is located at Arthur Head in Fremantle.

What year the building was constructed? The Round House is the first permanent building to be built in the Swan River Colony and was completed in 1830.

Why it was constructed? The Fremantle Round House was intended to be used as a prison. It had eight cells and it also had a jailer’s residence. All cells opened out into a central courtyard.

Who designed it? Does the building design have a name? The Round House was designed by Henry Willey Reveley.

How it was constructed? What was the building technique based on? The Fremantle Round House structure is based on a Panopticon design. The Panopticon is a type of prison designed by philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Private labours were employed to complete the construction, which took six months.

What materials were used in its construction? The Round House’s design utilised the abundant limestone resources located in Fremantle.

What other buildings in Fremantle were built at a similar time? The Round House was the first building to be built in the Swan River Colony. However, soon after this time other buildings and structures were constructed. The Fremantle Whaling Company constructed a jetty on Bathers Beach, directly in front of the Round House, in 1837. Soon afterwards, in 1838, a tunnel was excavated under the Round House to allow whalers to unload products onto transportation.

What was happening in Fremantle at that time? Fremantle was a young settlement. The population was growing rapidly and the need for a larger gaol was growing.
