Land Remediation Project (Web-based educational tool) Angel de Vicente SELLIC – University of Edinburgh
Introduction Collaboration with School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. http://www.civ.ed.ac.uk/ http://www.civ.ed.ac.uk/ Case studies developed as part of the Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professorship scheme. http://www.raeng.org.uk/education/vps/ http://www.raeng.org.uk/education/vps/ Developing a web-based educational tool for use in undergraduate teaching on land remediation.
Background Computer aided learning in geotechnical engineering education (Jaksa, M., Davison, L. and Toll, G., 2000). Using computers to teach (Davison, L., 1999). GeotechniCAL software --- http://www.uwe.ac.uk/geocal/ http://www.uwe.ac.uk/geocal/
Goal To create an educational tool consisting of: 1. Static information relating to a number of case studies on land remediation. 2. An educational game. Modelling of procedures used on a land remediation project
Authoring aspects Since tool is to be used over a number of years: Simple web-based interface for administration of users, resources, etc. Focus on reusability of tool, allowing teaching staff to create their own case studies by selecting, recombining and adding materials.
Demo of prototype Administration http://www.sellic.ed.ac.uk/Development/LandRemediation /Scripts/geohome.pl?from=admin 1. Adding new case study material (HTML and CSV files). 2. Combining material to create a case study. 3. Administering users.
Demo of prototype Educational game http://www.sellic.ed.ac.uk/Development/LandRemediation /Scripts/geohome.pl?from=login 1. Simulation of land remediation project costs (budget). 2. Usage of tools (Borehole, etc.). 3. Individual notepad and submission of solutions.
Conclusions Framework of educational game part of project developed. Focus on ease of use and reusability for teaching staff. Still to develop case studies content.
