INTRODUCTION The course will cover aspects of : Molecules and Chemical Bonding; Properties of selected compounds related to the periodic law Coordination Chemistry Introduction to Organic Chemistry Scope of Organic chemistry and natural sources of organic compounds Determination of empirical and molecular and structural formulae of organic compounds, Common types of organic reactions - addition, substitution, elimination, rearrangements etc Introduction to macro-molecular compounds and natural products.

Aim of the Course To develop student generic skill in the area of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. To develop their ability to identify ionic bonds, covalent bonds, polarity of bonds, coordinate bonds, metallic bonds, basic crystalline structures, e.g. NaCl and metallic lattices, trends in properties of the elements across the periods and down the groups To be able to name inorganic complexes and know their respective properties and uses To be able to identify the origin of organic compounds, with emphasis on coal and petroleum To know how organic compounds are isolated, purified and identified from natural sources To understand the influence of bond length, bond angles and bond strength on the reactivity, physical and chemical properties of organic compounds

LEARNING OBJECTIVES After completing the lesson, students will be able To state the properties of elements across the periods and along the groups To name inorganic complexes and state their properties To isolate, purify and characterize any organic compound from its natural source To prepare simple drugs such as aspirin

Course Materials General Chemistry by the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry LAUTECH, Ogbomoso Fundamental University Organic and Inorganic Chemistry by Olajire Abass Tips!!! Studying the reference materials and practising the questions at the end of each chapter will enhance your performance in the final examinations.

Preparing for Examination Past exam papers Contacts with your course instructors Your own notes Advice from students who took the exam the previous years Tutorial conversation between the learners. NB: Books, such as Organic Chemistry by I.L. Finar and Concise Inorganic Chemistry by J.D. Lee will not be required to pass examination in this course, however it will provide excellent additional information concerning this course if you choose to read them.

PRE - REQUISITES Student must have basic knowledge of Chemistry at O-Level or equivalent.

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS Practice questions at the end of each chapter of the reference books will be helpful in preparing for exams. Past examination questions and tutorial questions will also be useful.

ASSESSMENT Continuous assessment which includes Quiz, Assignment, Mid-Semester Test and Attendance will constitute 30% of overall assessment. Examination will be 70%. EXAM MALPRACTICES AND PLAGIARISM WILL ATTRACT PENALTY SUCH AS FAILURE IN THE COURSE OR REFERRAL TO ODL DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE
