  To enhance the printing capabilities of the iGEN4 printer by designing a sensing device that will detect the variable bending stiffness of an 8.5”x11” sheet of paper moving through a simple paper path at a speed of 250mm/s to 750mm/s.  The solution needs to be socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable. The Goal is to Measure Paper Stiffness

 Stiffness the old fashioned way Tensile Stiffness Bending Stiffness Equivalent stiffness

  Currently, the stiffness is measured by:  Using off-line samples  Done manually and slowly  Cannot provide feedback during manufacturing  There is a need for a device to measure stiffness in real time because the current process is time consuming and can be error prone. Innovation

  Pieces of paper with various stiffness change in travel time through the printer path. As they move through the printing path, stiff paper “cuts the corner” around a bend, while less stiff paper travels a farther distance.  Unaccounted differences in stiffness could be the difference between a registered image and an unregistered image. Stiffness Does Matter

  Currently uses a dual Laser system to measure Properties of film. (thick- ness, width, etc.)  Modify dual laser system to calculate the change in thickness of the paper. Converted Film Sensor

  Scaled down version of the sensor made to measure the bending stiffness of an 8.5” x11” sheet of paper after the first roller. Ultrasonic Sensor after the first roller

  Ultrasonic sensor sits above paper.  Scaled down to measure An 8.5” x 11” piece of paper.  Measurement is completely automated. Modular component

 The Modular Component  A transducer sends a sound wave with a high frequency to a receiver.  The sound wave is distorted as it travels through a medium.

  The echo that is received is used to determine the distance between the sensor and the paper.  Knowing these values leads to the evaluation of stiffness. The Modular Component

  The Modular component:  Real time data to help prevent misprints  Relieves old method of measurement  Easy installation. No extensive alterations  Measuring and printing process completely automated Conclusion
