Why Chemical Engineering? Opportunities Abound!

What is Chemical Engineering? Chemical Engineering focuses on taking resources/raw materials and making them into useful products in a safe and efficient manner!

Opportunities... –Develop alternative energy sources –Protect the environment by reducing the use of toxic materials –Design and develop innovative devices to diagnose and treat human ailments –Aid in the development of even more sophisticated semiconductor chips

Opportunities... Develop advanced techniques for purifying, sterilizing, and modifying the ingredients in the foods we eat Develop high performance materials such as specialized plastics and nanomaterials

Chemical Reaction Powered Car

Goal Design a car that is powered by a chemical reaction. The car will be constructed by using K’nex kits. We will test the cars to see which travels the farthest!!!

How is the Car Powered? Kitchen Chemistry! Chemical Reaction What are we going to use? –Vinegar (5%) = acetic acid + water –Baking soda = sodium bicarbonate Acetic Acid + Sodium Bicarbonate → Water + Carbon Dioxide + Sodium Acetate http://engr.oregonstate.edu/momentum/k12/march04/index.html
