Intro to Physics: Mechanics and Metrics

Mechanics is… The study of objects and their motion! For example, how do you describe the motion of an object? A basketball once it has been released A race car on a track Can you think of 3 quantities we should measure? (Table-share, 30 seconds, Go!)

3 Fundamental Quantities in Mechanics Distance (length) Mass (not weight!) Time Other quantities like speed, velocity, etc. can be calculated from these basics!

Symbols vs Units Symbols: Represent a quantity in a chart or equation Example  E = mc 2 Stand alone! Don’t need to be with a number. Units: Placed after a measured number Example  15m (15 meters) Use MKS system, part of the SI system Needs to have a number with it!

Now for the table… http://www.gpb.org/chemistry- physics/physics/101http://www.gpb.org/chemistry- physics/physics/101 (6:47)

Derived Quantities Can be calculated from 2 or more of the fundamental quantities. Example  speed limits measured in mph –Miles measure ______________. –Hours measure ______________. –In metrics, what units would we use to calculate?

DQ #1: Velocity Formula  v = distance/time (d/t) MKS unit  meters/second (m/s)

DQ #2: Area Formula  A = Length x Width (L x W) MKS unit  meters 2 (m 2 )

DQ #3: Volume Formula  V = length x width x height (L x W x H) MKS unit  meters 3 (m 3 )

DQ #4: Density Formula  D = mass/volume (m/v) MKS unit  kilograms/meters 3 (kg/m 3 )

English System vs Metrics Using the English system of measurement, determine the number of inches in a mile. 1 mile = 5280 feet 1 ft = 12 inches (You may use your phones as calculators.) Are those nice numbers to work with?

Metric Awareness Quiz With the people at your table, DISCUSS and answer the questions on the quiz. Please use a highlighter to mark the answer that you believe to be correct!

Why Metrics? Set up as a base 10 system –Meaning that converting between units only requires multiplying or dividing by powers of 10. –For example, 1 cm = 10 mm Only time does not follow this rule! Base units in metric system are m, L, g, s (usually)

KILO 1000 Units HECTO 100 Units DEKA 10 Units DECI 0.1 Unit CENTI 0.01 Unit MILLI 0.001 Unit Meters Liters Grams Ladder Method How do you use the “ ladder ” method? 1 st – Determine your starting point. 2 nd – Count the “ jumps ” to your ending point. 3 rd – Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction. 4 km = _________ m 1 2 3 How many jumps does it take? Starting Point Ending Point 4. 1 __. 2 3 = 4000 m

Try these conversions using the ladder method. 1000 mg = _______ g 1 L = _______ mL160 cm = _______ mm 14 km = _______ m109 g = _______ kg 250 m = _______ km Conversion Practice Compare using, or =. 56 cm 6 m 7 g 698 mg

Write the correct abbreviation for each metric unit. 1) Kilogram _____ 4) Milliliter _____ 7) Kilometer _____ 2) Meter _____ 5) Millimeter _____ 8) Centimeter _____ 3) Gram _____ 6) Liter _____ 9) Milligram _____ Try these conversions, using the ladder method. 10) 2000 mg = _______ g 15) 5 L = _______ mL 20) 16 cm = _______ mm 11) 104 km = _______ m 16) 198 g = _______ kg 21) 2500 m = _______ km 12) 480 cm = _____ m 17) 75 mL = _____ L 22) 65 g = _____ mg 13) 5.6 kg = _____ g 18) 50 cm = _____ m 23) 6.3 cm = _____ mm 14) 8 mm = _____ cm 19) 5.6 m = _____ cm 24) 120 mg = _____ g Metric Conversion Challenge

Compare using, or =. 25) 63 cm 6 m 27) 5 g 508 mg 29) 1,500 mL 1.5 L 26) 536 cm 53.6 dm 28) 43 mg 5 g 30) 3.6 m 36 cm
