2 One vote does make a difference In 1877: ONE VOTE in the Electoral College gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency In 1960: John F. Kennedy won (and Richard Nixon lost) the presidential election by a margin of less than ONE VOTE per precinct nationwide. (c) 2014 1 In 1876: ONE VOTE saved President Andrew Johnson from removal from office. In 1876: ONE VOTE changed France from a Monarchy to a Republic

3 REGISTERING TO VOTE National Voter Registration Act of 1993 contains provisions designed to make it easier to vote: –Citizens must be given the chance to register to vote when applying for, renewing, or changing the address on their driver's license or non-driver ID card. –Voter registration forms must also be available at libraries, schools, banks, and other institutions to serve people without drivers' licenses. –All states must have a system of mail registration. 5 REGISTERING TO VOTE IN OREGON You may register in person at a county election office, Department of Motor Vehicles office, or certain public assistance agencies. Voter registration can also be done through the mail Voter registration cards must be postmarked no later than the 21 st day before the election 4 (c) 2014

6 TO REGISTER TO VOTE You must provide: –Full name –Residence address –Date of birth –Signature –A piece of identification –Political party affiliation (if so desired) A county clerk or election officer is responsible for elections (c) 2014 5
