Motion Sensor Muhajir Ab. Rahim School of Mechatronic Engineering, KUKUM

Introduction Designed to measure the rate of change of position, location, or displacement of an object that is occurring. The primary form of motion sensor is the accelerometer that can provide acceleration, speed (or velocity), and position information.

Type of Motion Rectilinear Angular Vibration Shock

Accelerometer Principles In applications that involve flight, such as aircraft and satellites, accelerometers are based on properties of rotating masses. In the industrial world, however, the most common design is based on a combination of Newton's law of mass acceleration and Hooke's law of spring action.

Accelerometer Principles Newton’s Law Hooke’s Law

Types of Accelerometer Potentiometric LVDT Variable Reluctance Piezoelectric

Based on property exhibited by certain crystals where a voltage is generated across the crystal when stressed When exposed to acceleration, the test mass stresses the crystal by a force (F=ma), resulting in a voltage generated across the crystal
